    Boulder Pant

The Topo Athletic Boulder Pant is super comfortable and high-performing, but be careful—when you put them on you might just find yourself running out of excuses. With a two-way stretch nylon fabric, you won't be able to blame restrictive pants for the fact that you might not be flexible enough for that last move. And with the casual yet stylish look you'll be rocking at the crag and around town, you won't be able to justify the fact that you've been living in one pair of ratty jeans for the past three months.

    • Comfortable and stretchy climbing pants with everyday versatility
    • Two-way stretch fabric helps you nail problems you've been stuck on
    • Drawcord adjustment gives you a custom and non-constricting fit
    • Pockets offer around-town storage for essential items
    • Casual look gives you a technical climbing pant and an everyday pant

Not sure if the person who designed these ever wore pants for outdoor activities. The material absolutely doesn't stretch despite being 4% spandex. The cuff draw string has no toggle to tighten, but I doubt there's enough length to add one. The zipper fly on elastic waisted pants makes zero sense. The fit is really funky, there's a huge distance from the waist to the bottom of the crotch, this highly restricts movement and creates a really baggy pouch. I returned these immediately.

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. The Topo Designs Boulder Pants are a comfy all around pant. I used these pants while camping and they were comfortable and durable. I'm a girl and while these are a Mens pant I found that the size small fit me relatively well, I ended up rolling over the top of the pants though as the crotch area was a bit long. My one complaint is that the ankle drawstring doesn't have any sort of closure system, if you want to use it you have to tie a knot in the drawstring which was fine but I felt could've been made a little more practical with some sort of cordstop or toggle. I did like that the drawstring was a differen't color than the pant though, I thought it gave the pant a little pop of color. I'm not a climber so I can't speak to the use of these pants for climbing but I found that the Topo Designs Boulder Pant were comfortable for semi - active outdoor activities like camping and small hikes or scrambles around the campsite. If I were going on a longer hike or doing more rigorous activity though, I would want something a little stretchier.

Disclaimer: I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review Is my personal opinion. The Topo design Boulder pants are a nice climbing/ yoga/ hiking pant EXCEPT for their one flaw. For me, they have a slightly awkward fit. I have the size Medium and it seems that the waistband sits slightly higher than I'd expect and the crotch is a bit longer than Id like. The Topo Boulder pants have a gusset for added range of motion but I find that it doesn't seem to add much flexibility when doing a center splits. They have a very flat front which makes them slightly uncomfortable. For reference, I am 5'10 and 165lb and typically wear a size 31 x 32. The material is stretchy but not soft like Prana's Zion line which I also own and prefer. Other interesting design features include the front zipper (even though they have an elastic waist), rear zipper pocket and ankle cuff bands. I don't understand the purpose of a front zipper with an elastic waist band so would probably prefer it not there. The rear zipper pocket is a nice feature but the zipper is a bit big and can be painful to sit on sometimes. Finally, The ankle cuffs don't have any way to secure them so you can tighten it, but it'll work loose over time. This isn't really a problem because they have a pretty skinny fit which means I can roll them up and it stays just fine. From an aesthetic point I like the grey color with the red accents. The picture in the product doesn't show the colors well but all the adjustments and belt ties are red and the colors look nice. Overall these are not my 'go to' pants but easily could be with some fitment tweaks that I hope Topo includes on the next generation.

    Disclaimer:

2nd person I've seen who was apparently given these pants by Backcountry. What's the secret to getting free stuff?

I’m not a big fan of belts when backpacking and traveling so I’m all about pants with a drawstring. I broke these pants in hiking and touring around Ireland. I liked the security of the zippered and snap-button back pockets (left and right respectively). The zipper fly was convenient but made the front of the pants a bit stiff (no pun) and awkward. The cinch-bands on the cuffs are a little odd but they worked at keeping the cuffs over my calf when playing in the surf. These are descent pants overall but I much prefer my Patagonia baggies pants.
