Recon 1.0 Mountain Bike Shoe

Whether the day ahead has open gravel, winding singletrack, or even some hike-a-bike in store, the Specialized Recon 1.0 Mountain Bike Shoe covers all your bases with a durable, efficient, and comfortable-in-the-dirt design. Courtesy of Specialized's exclusive STRIDE toe-flex technology, this shoe is able to deftly strike the balance of confident, natural movement off the bike and efficient pedaling in the saddle with a stiffness index of 6.0.

Backed by science, the Body Geometry sole and footbed are designed to increase power and efficiency by serving up optimal hip, knee, and foot alignment for pump track sessions and all-day XC sufferfests alike. A lifted heel adds even more natural comfort when you're forced to walk sections of the ride, and SlipNot rubber treads on the outsole lock in surefooted traction in case you encounter muddy conditions.

Amazing Shoe

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
11.5/45
Height:
5' 11"
Weight:
175

Haven't it out on the trails yet, as it has been raining very hard, but this shoe fits me perfectly and seems to be very well built. However, I was originally told it was supposed to arrive on a Tuesday, and it got delayed three times to the same Friday. Sucks because I was planning to ride with it Thursday

I bought these shoes a month ago and love them. They fit as expected, accepted my Time cleats, and they look good.

Solid shoe!

I'm a bit of a novice cyclist and have been slowly curating my collection of gear over time (as it is extremely expensive). I finally decided to buy nicer shoes. I wear these for road cycling because I feel like the mountain biking shoes are typically more comfortable. They worked perfectly with my spd clip ins and I didn't experience any hot spots on my first ride. I don't have much experience with shoes though, my first and only pair has been a cheap $40 set off Amazon. Sizing seemed pretty true, I'm typically a 9 in most brands and a 40 fit perfectly. If you don't want to spend $$$ on a shoe but want a nice sturdy option, these are great. I also love the color/rubber trekking on the bottoms! Again, I use them for road cycling so I can't speak for how they hold up on a trail.

Excellent budget shoe

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:
44
Height:

Weight:
160

For the price, I think these are great. The three straps allow a good range of adjustability and helps to reduce pressure points when tightening. I've tried Shimano, Fizik, and Pearl Izumi clipless shoes, and found that all of them pinched across the top of my foot at the toes. But Specialized seem to have the right amount of width that the upper is not pinched inward when tightening. The velcro is strong, and a lot faster to get on and tight than Boa systems. The bolt holes are well positioned slightly inward of centre, and there are clear markings that make it easy setting up the same cleat position and angle on both shoes. The sole feels sufficiently stiff that I don't notice any flex on landings etc.

Nice budget level shoe

For context, I have a narrow flat foot and weigh close to 160 with gear. This is pretty good for a budget shoe. For me, at this price point, I'm not going to get that glove like fit of some of the $200 and up shoes (remember - narrow foot). I like Specialized's body geometry thinking that went into the sole of the shoe - it means that I don't have to put a special insole in the shoe to get proper knee motion. They give it a "6" on the stiffness meter, which works just fine for me. I have used stiffer shoes, but I'm happy with a 6. If you're more on the Clydesdale side, then you might need something a bit stiffer if you're looking to transfer that 300 plus watts to the pedals. The uppers are comfortable, but on my narrow foot, they tend to bunch up a bit near the toes when the straps are tightened. If your foot is higher volume, you probably won't have a problem. The shoes are also reasonably light considering that the sole has some nice size lugs. I have not gotten them wet so far, but the uppers seem to be made of a fast drying material. I used the size chart provided by Specialized here on the Backcountry website, and it was spot on for me. A European size 45 is equivalent to an 11.5 US size in this shoe, so yeah, it runs about a half size large compared to some other shoes. If you're looking for a XC or gravel shoe that won't break the bank, yet has some nice design features, this could be the one. When I can afford a more expensive pair of shoes, I will definitely consider the Specialized lineup.

Run really large, tough buy from online

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Nice shoe but hard to recommend buying something that is so far off typical sizing from an online shop. No fun paying $7 to return a shoe that clearly did not fit or run true to size, recommend buying from a store that lets you try on a size and not pay for something that does not fit well. Typically wear a 45 or 46 but I am hesitant to even order a 44 in case that is also too large... shame as the green color really is nice! Trouble is not just length but the toe box is also a bit too generous. If you want a loose fitting shoe its great but I'd pass on buying from a store front that can't let you try on and find the correct size
