Lock it up.

There are other thru-axle adapters on the market, there have been for years. However, there are none that let you lock your beloved ride to your roof without some janky cable-and-padlock-style contraption. The RockyMounts Drive Shaft answers the call with a clean, easy-to use design that will have mountain bikers dancing and thieves running away, confused.

The other beauty of the Drive Shaft is that it, unlike the other adapters that are available, accepts both 15mm and 20mm thru-axles. You’ll need to keep the plastic reducer shims handy to accommodate your 15mm axle, but it’s much more convenient than swapping adapters. And it’s much, much more convenient than replacing your stolen bike.

 • Locks with a cable and padlock
 • Accommodates 15mm and 20mm thru-axles
 • Plastic reducer shims included

Well made, but wrong fit for me

I returned this product before using it

I tried to use it w/ a newer bike on older Yakima, Thule, and Rocky Mounts trays. The wheelbase on the new bike is too long for this to work properly. The rear wheel was barely hanging on the back of the tray. With the adapter rotated forward, to pull the rear wheel farther into the tray, the disk brake mount on the Fox Factory 32 hit the adapter. The adapter seems very well made, but was unable to breathe new life into my old roof mounts. Thanks BC, for a solid return policy!

Bought direct from Rocky Mounts

I've put it through the wringer

I purchased one of these in a local shop and it included the 12mm and 15mm shims. Backcountry's description only states 15mm so I purchased direct from Rocky Mounts since their product description definitely stated 12mm shims were still included plus they're able to key it alike to my existing adapter. BC, please update the description though if this does include the blue 12mm shims. Also, to the reviewer that was not satisfied, the directions from Rocky Mounts do state an additional strap is needed on your rear wheel to prevent that rotation. I use a Voile ski strap as the instructions show and it works great.

Just works

I've put it through the wringer

Contrary to some of the other reviews this holds my bike really well. My axle does not spin in the clamp at all. The adaptor does rotate, however the directions say that is normal and once you attach your rear wheel there is not more movement. Get the lock cores with it and you have a sturdy, safe rig.

Just does not work

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this adaptor to add to my new Rocky Mounts Pitch Fork rack. It just does not hold the bike steady. The adaptor rotates forward and backwards on the rack as the rack is unable to tighten the adaptor down. Then when the bike was put on the adaptor, the axle rotated inside the adaptor. Neither the rack nor the adaptor was able to get tight enough to hold the bike steady. Not good with an expensive bike. I will try the Thule 15mm adaptor that is not so fancy.

Clamp it

I've put it through the wringer

I have been using this when I transport my mountain bike on top of my Subi. It is easy to install and works very well. Sure it is not quite as easy to use as a rack that does not require you to remove your wheel, however this works better than any of the other axle mount adapters I have seen or used. Simply flip it open, remove your wheel, install your axle, and slap your ride on the rack and lock it down. Once this is tensioned properly it holds your bike in place very well.

I've used it several times

Been doing this bike thing for long enough that none of my bike rack mounts work with my thru axle bikes. And now that the bike industry is playing with 20mm thru axle, figured I?d get the adaptor that will do both 15 and 20mm axles. Works as advertised. All my existing bike mounts (Yakima) have a fork lock?although I now have a separate key to keep track of (the one with this adapter), I can use the Yakima fork lock to secure the adapter and the adapter lock secures the thru axle bike. Together, it should keep the pseudo honest bike thief (aka scum of the earth) at bay.

Best out there, right now

I've put it through the wringer

To "cheaply" convert my current roof-top rack this is the best thing going, not terribly expensive considering it comes with the lock. I just ordered a second one.

This one is a lot easier to use than the typical fork ups where you have to hold the bike just right while putting the thru axle on, with this you already have the axle in place and just set the vice/clamp.

Remember to either remove the mount, or at the very least re-lock the clamp. I have lost both the 15mm adapter and the t-bolt because of my ineptitude! (thankfully I now have a track rack, which is worlds easier and allows my wife to mess with the bikes without me.)

Best one on the market, still a pain

Definitely the best thru axle rack adapter out there, and the only one that actually locks. But its still a huge pain compared to standard QR's. Kinda wish I hadn't 'upgraded' to the thru axle on my new fork.

Is there some feature to stop a would be thief from just unscrewing your thru axle and making off with your bike? Perhaps compression / friction on the axle?

The compression of the shims on the axle prevent it from rotating. If a thief was determined, not going to stop him. That can be said for any rack system. They won't stop a determined thief, but keep the somewhat honest people honest.
