Instead of mixing and matching wheel depths, the race-savvy folks at Reynolds put together the perfect pairing of slippery aerodynamics and stable handling with their 58/72 Aero Carbon Road Wheelset. The combination of a shallower 58-millimeter front wheel in conjunction with a deeper 72-millimeter rear wheel provides the effortless rolling speed desired for competitive racing and training scenarios—without being a major hindrance to handling in tricky crosswinds. Reynold's proprietary carbon fiber construction, also known as CR6, places six unique carbon lay-ups in strategic locations for the best characteristics of stiffness, strength, and low weight.
Diving into the wheel's streamlined profile, you'll find the 72-millimeter rear wheel shaves precious seconds from your racing and training time with its deep dish profile paired with Reynolds Dispersive Effect Termination (DET) shaping. DET shaping smooths out turbulent air moving across the wheel, re-attaching the airflow to the wheel's most aerodynamic portion as an effective means of reducing drag and increasing stability in violent crosswinds. The deeper rear wheel allows you to gain a far more efficient aerodynamic profile, making it suitable for time trial and triathlon scenarios where saving time is of utmost importance.
At the front, the 58-millimeter deep profile is sufficient for reducing unwanted drag, especially considering it's using the same Dispersive Effect Termination as the rear wheel. However, being 14-millimeters shallower has a major effect on the handling of your bike, seeing the front wheel sees the leading edge of air resistance. The shallower front allows you to ride this wheelset in everyday scenarios and competitive road races where stable handling is essential.
Both wheels feature Reynold's patented Cryogenic Glass Transition (CTg) Brake Track, which employs a high-grade resin in conjunction with carbon-specific Cryo BluePads to reduce the wheel's braking temperature by 53% compared to other manufacturer's rim-and-pad combinations. This means you'll have dependable braking power on extended descents where traditional carbon wheels have struggled in the past. And to ensure safety, Reynolds embeds a 10-millimeter red line as a replacement indicator when you've worn down the brake track beyond acceptable limits.
