    Packable warmth.

Rab's Ignition 3 Sleeping Bag is comfy for camping and lightweight and packable for backpacking. Its Pyrotec synthetic insulation provides a surprising amount of breathability for maintaining warmth in winter deserts and summer alpine conditions. Because its so breathable, Pyrotec makes the Ignition very packable for compact storage in your backpack.

Rab designed the Ignition with a tapered mummy shape that gives more room up top compared to most mummies, and the angled footbox stays snug yet still allows for some movement. The ripstop shell has a high strength-to-weight ratio, and the polyester lining is soft to the touch. This bag also features an internal draft collar and a drawcord at the hood for secure coverage.

    Women's Ignition 3

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My women's Rab Ignition 3 arrived for me to review just in time to throw it into my car for a climbing trip to Wyoming. Full disclosure: I am a car camper! In another life I did a ton of backpacking, but for the past five years it's been climbing and car camping. My last synthetic bag was a Cat's Meow that I bought at least eight years ago and beat up long ago, so I was excited to have a new one that keeps its loft!

During this trip, I slept on couches, my car, a truck, and a tent. As it was the middle of July, I didn'™t test the colder limit of the temperature rating, but I was pleasantly surprised by the range of warmer temperatures that I was able to use this bag in complete comfort. I also camped in the Big Horns at about 9500 ft., where the temperature dropped to the mid-30's at night.

My favorite and the most striking thing about the bag was its softness. I have to admit -- I am a sucker for that kind of thing. The inner lining is so soft and silky that crawling into it every night was a pleasure. And, I love the color (even though I don't care)! Although packability was not my main concern, I was surprised by how well the Ignition 3 packed down. The synthetic fill (Pyrotec 160g) doesn'™t feel dense in any way. It'™s amazingly light and compressible for its warmth. The little stow pocket on the inside was the perfect size for my phone and allowed me to keep track of it so I wasn'™t rolling over it in the middle of the night. I appreciated the drawstrings in both the draft collar and the hood.

Cons: The zipper caught on the outside material occasionally, and I found myself wishing there was a zipper pull when searching for it.

Construction: From what I can tell, the bag is very well made. There are no dead spots in the insulation and the stitching seems tight. I also loved the design of the compression stuff sack, which allowed the bag to stuff quickly and easily and cinch down with convenient buckles and cinch straps.

Fit: I am almost 5'5" and the tapered mummy of the women'™s cut fit well. There was room to move (especially in the footbox, which I appreciated), without being drafty during the chilly nights I was sleeping at elevation. If it had been a lot colder, I could have worn extra layers and been fine as well.

Final thought: I never thought about my sleep over the trip. I didn'™t think about it because I was always comfortable, whether I was sleeping in my car at a rest stop or in the mountains. Because of its versatility, I will use this bag for 95% of my endeavors.
