Upgrade your crank's grey matter.
If you're riding current generation aluminum crank arms but missed out on a powermeter model, then chances are good that the Power Meter Installation Kit for Consumer Supplied Cranks is your ride metric salvation. It adds data analysis to your alloy crank, letting you train smarter by analyzing your entire pedal stroke to help identify weaknesses and areas for improvement.
The kit consists of a magical box, and the process is simple. Just drop your Shimano crankset into the box, drop the box in the mail, and wait for some seven to ten business days. During that time period, the alchemists at Pioneer will be transubstantiating your crankset from a shapely alloy article to a power-gathering data magnet. When the crankset returns to you, it will have a Pioneer power meter installed.
Pioneer recently updated the original list of compatible cranksets, which was limited to Shimano Dura-Ace 9000 and Ultegra 6800. In addition to those two racing stalwarts, the powermeter installation kit now accommodates cranksets including the new Dura-Ace 9100, 105 5800, XTR Trail M9020, and XT M8000. The list also expands beyond Japan to include products engineered in Italy (Campagnolo Potenza), the US (Cannondale's Si and Si-SL2) and FSA's SL-K, a crankset whose ubiquity has made it a true citizen of the world.
- Upgrade your current crank with power meter capabilities
- Accuracy within typical range of industry standards
- Measures pedal stroke efficiency for targeted improvement

Great so far!
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I just installed my first Pioneer on my new road bike last week, and I am very happy with it thus far.
Power numbers have been consistent and on par with my Computrainer and Tacx Bushido; I have had zero issues, granted it has only been one week, it is still electronic equipment, so I take this as a victory.
Installation was as expected, and very simple. I even used my CA500 computer to do a firmware update before first use, which was relatively easy.
I was not terribly confident in using their magnet patch on the drive-side of the bike; in case of a dropped chain, it could be torn off. So I employed a K-Edge Chain Catcher Pro w/ SRM magnet, which is a perfect solution, especially if you have low clearance where you would normally place a magnet.
Overall, the construction appears very solid, and I expect to update this at a future date with better details, and hopefully a successful experience.

Nice data limited warranty
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
Using the cyclo-sphere online software with this an the Pioneer computer brings very actionable data to improved your pedal stroke which is great. Also works with Garmin and other ANT+ computers. It does take more time to set up than other power systems but that's the price of the additional data.
There is an exclusion in the warranty to be aware of - “This product is designed to be used for recreational cycling and cycle training applications only and is not designed to withstand racing conditions. Additionally, this product is designed to be used while cycling on paved roads only. Any damage or malfunction arising from use in racing or riding on dirt roads, cobblestone or any other unpaved roads will not be covered by the manufacturer’s limited warranty”
I purchased it for my gravel/winter/trainer bike so this is a problem. Will have to swap the crank for another and use my stages PM on gravel and off road rides, inconvenient but manageable. I was disappointed to see this in the warranty and called Pioneer - they told me the rough conditions might cause things to break, it's not designed for that. Interesting since their web page indicates it was developed over a tough season of racing on cobbles, in snow, rain etc. A bit misleading. Still amazing data - just may not be appropriate for use all the time considering it's a bit delicate.
Quick to Mail Back East to Install
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Received Power meter 6 days after it was received by Pioneer so in my book that is super fast esp since I live on the east coast and there located in Long Beach, CA. Installation was super easy at least with there Cycling Computer as the new firmware makes it a breeze to calibrate magnets and switch modes all right on the computer. well add a longer term review but quick test on the trainer showed it was a working.
Is this Pioneer Power Meter that is installed on a consumer supplied crank the new Bluetooth compatible Pioneer Power Meter?
Right now Pioneer does not have a bluetooth compatible option.
I have a DA-9000 crank but I run the Shimano 50-36 rings on it. Will that work properly with this? As I said they are the Shimano rings but they're not in any of the configurations that Pioneer normally offers. Their docs say 50-34 or 52-36 but not 50-36 I would like to buy this thing but if it doesn't work with 50-36 I would have to go back to 50-34.
Can i install and use this thing with DA-9000 50-36?
Hey Joseph, yes that should work fine in swapping out the rings, email me for more specifics on that or any help at all - email@example.com
Do you know if this will fit on a 2014 S-Works Roubaix?
Is the power meter compatible with 55/42 chain rings?
any rings that will fit the 4 bolt shimano dura ace or ultegra cranks will work.
Yes. I need help installing my power meter any help
That shouldn't be a problem Kevin from what I can tell.
