Sometimes simple kit like Pearl Izumi's Thermal Balaclava does the trick. And those times are typically when the mercury is registering in the low 30s and you've got a healthy plateful of base miles to grind out. The Thermal Balaclava is made from Pearl's P.R.O. Thermal Dry fabric, which pulls moisture from your thinking appendage and insulates with a low-pile, brushed inner face. Warm, dry—simple.

- Q & A
A great balaclava
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I like this one best after trying several others. It is a tight fit on my medium size head. It feels really tight so it might be discouraging at first but after putting it on and riding for a couple of hours, it was business as usual. If you have a very large head then perhaps it would be a problem. The material feel medium thick and overall construction seem excellent. I like the hinged face mask, as it could be pulled down to the chin independent of the cap. There is also sub chin mask inside, so basically it has a chin mask and a face mask. I have ridden it in the 30s degree F and it felt great. I am sure it could be used for a much colder condition. The only thing I like to improve would be to have the cap come down further on my forehead, as it is designed to seat a little high up there regardless of how much I try to pull it down. I also customized mine by cutting a hole around my mouth area so I can breath through my mouth without pulling the face mask down. Overall, I think this balaclava is a better one than most other common brands. Thanks!
