    Defies physics.

Tell your astrophysicist and sci-fi friends that Patagonia found out what's in a black hole, or at least the Black Hole 60L Duffel Bag: your climbing, hiking, and traveling gear from your last five-day trip. Inspired by rugged-yet-light alpine packs, the Black Hole features a burly ripstop fabric filmed in a TPU laminate and coated with DWR for the ultimate in outdoors protection. The padded base protects your gear throughout the trip, and Patagonia padded the removable shoulder strap and removable backpack straps for comfort. Internal organizers and zippered mesh pockets organize all the small things, while the external side pocket stows the duffel for compact storage. Compression straps prevent your gear from bouncing around whether you're traveling via airplane or four-wheeler.

    Quality Duffel

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my favorite duffel bag I have ever owned. I have had the 60L Black Hold Duffel for the last 5 years and it is still rocking with heavy use. This thing is indestructible and keeps your gear safe inside from the elements.

    WORTH IT

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Duffel, meets backpack, meets INDESTRUCTIBLE VESSEL. I wanted luggage that would withstand elements ranging from backcountry camping to airline abuse and this is it. Reasonable price for the durability and functionality. The backpack straps are a lifesaver when the pack is stuffed, yet the 60L isn't too big to pass as a carry on with some airlines. My only request would be more pockets but that's because I'm an organizational freak. But I definitely see more blackhole purchases in my future.

    Roomy bag

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Used this 60 L bag for 4 week car camping trip. Able to stuff all my clothing, shoes etc. and could always squeeze another item in.
Material is heavy duty, carry handles sturdy. I have used this bag multiple times since May 2017. Highly recommend!

    Best Duffle Ever!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Ive owned this duffle for almost 2 years and used it for weekend trips and longer 2 week journeys as checked baggage halfway around the world- still looks like new. Backpack straps are comfortable and great for terrain that makes wheeled luggage impractical. - even the duffle handles are long enough to use hoist over your shoulder in a pinch. I've stuffed it to capacity, cinched it down and have yet to bust a seam. Will never buy any other duffel!

    super nice

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love the black hole series. This duffel is particularly nice because it has more structure than the light weight version. They also have more pockets and organizational features, and the straps are actually comfortable.

    Best Purchase

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was looking for a carry on bag that wasn't on wheels or a hard shell. Something that my small frame could manage and this has been perfect. I prefer to carry weight on my back so the convertibility into a backpack is clutch. If you pack light this bag could easily fit everything you need for a week long trip. This is now my go to bag for every type of trip.

    First outing

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Last week, a 7-day summer camp as counselor was my first outing for this bag. I packed two full changes of clothes for every day, plus an extra t-shirt for the cabin each night. Not including my wear-there clothes, that's something like 6 pairs of shorts, 6 pairs of long pants, 11 button-button down fishing shirts, plus six t-shirts for the cabin at night. Add to that 14 pairs of both socks and underwear, plus my favorite belt and coffee mug, and that was an incredible amount of clothes for one bag that doesn't feel in any way huge or unwieldy. It was definitely packed, without room for more, but it wasn't over-packed either so much that the zippers were straining. Honestly, I don't think I could have made a better choice for a bag that I don't plan will need to be replaced over the next 15 years. P.S. I forgot to add that I had also stashed my favorite pair of Van's in the bottom as well.

    New Standard

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Got this bag as a gift for my sister, and she loves it. This has basically become the new standard to which other duffels are measured. Quality construction and materials, well thought out design, cool colors. Done.

    High Quality

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The bag was smaller than I was expecting. It turns out to be the perfect size for weekend trips and a perfect carry on bag. High quality durability and an all around great bag. The should straps have quick releases.

    Disappointing quality

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I love the functionality and size of this bag, but the first time I used it the plastic type fabric got damaged. I flew to Europe and took this bag as a carry on. Unfortunately, there’s three deep gashes in the fabric now after light use. I’m pretty upset the quality of the fabric wasn’t better and can’t stand up to light travel and careful handling.

    10 days in Brazil

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This bag was perfect! My girlfriend bought this for me as a gift. I used it for a 10 day trip to brazil. This included 36 hours of airport travel both ways. I was able to take just one 60l black hole. I carried it on every flight just fine. It fits perfect in the overhead compartment. The backpack straps are easy to attach and comfortable to carry. I love this bag! Durable and reliable . I will use it for years to come!

    Everything

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Packs down small, extremely durable, versatile carrying system, I do not know what else you could want out of a travel bag! Time for the 90L!

    Spacious, Durable, Overbuilt

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I only had the 45L black hole duffel in my hands for less than two hours before I also bought this 60L version. The 45L is perfect for a weekend trip, or as a spacious gym bag, but I knew I would need the ~30% more space if I wanted to use a duffel for a week-long trip or while traveling abroad. I can comfortably fit four packing cubes (large, medium, small, x-small), three pairs of shoes, toiletry bag, two jackets and an electronics organizer in the 60 with room to spare. This is the only duffel I have where even when it appears to be full, it's construction and zipper layout means you can easily cram it 20-25% more full.

The two mesh compartments are really nice for organizing small accessories or electronics. I went from traveling with a backpack and small roller/duffel for week to weekend-long trips to just traveling with this bag. Unless I'm traveling with a laptop, which is more rare, I stack my kindle or iPad on top of all of my other luggage and once I board the plane I can quickly open the top compartment to grab headphones, kindle, and any accessories from the two mesh compartments.

Finally, the side handles really shine as a feature when you're loading/unloading into a car or overhead storage of a plane. I have many duffel bags and travel bags and not a single one has these handles. It's definitely a very small feature but knowing the load capacity of these bags, those two handles make maneuvering the bag into a space much, much easier.

The only possible complaint I have about these bags is I wish there was more color variety. The paintbrush red in 45L is great, and I wish there were a handful more bright color options for the 60/90/120L sizes. That said, if that meant sacrificing build quality or QA, then I would much rather have the more limited color selection.

If you want a bag that can hold a ton of stuff, will replace a backpack/checked bag for longer trips and will stand up to everything you can throw at it for years to come, look no further.

    Simple and sturdy!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Love that this bag fits so much. I've taken the bag on three trips so far. The longest has been a 5 day hiking trip to Zion, Grand Canyon, and Antelope Canyon, where I was able to fit hiking boots, tevas, toiletries, clean hiking clothing for every day, *and* two extra sets of "normal" clothes. I even had room to throw in extra snacks. The backpack straps are a lifesaver, especially with the external zipper, where I usually throw my wallet and keys. It allows me to go completely handsfree at the airport. The only thing I would add to this bag is a duffel strap -- I wish I could carry a laptop backpack and the duffel together.

Overall, am super pleased with my purchase. Fits more than a roller bag, and feels even more compact. 9.5/10!

I would not call this perfect, but I found that taking one backpack strap off, and installing the remaining one on the opposite buckle, ends up making a pretty decent duffel strap. It's definitely not made to be used that way but if you lengthen the strap it fits pretty comfortable.

    Perfect for Everything

I use this bag for everything, great for weekend trips or just to throw some bike gear in for a day trip. Not totally waterproof but i have never had my gear get wet so that is always a plus!

We use this bag to put our back packs in when we fly. We have to empty them, but who cares. We use it for everything. Skiing....stuff it till it bloats...great to stuff into the roof carrier. American Airlines hates these, it holds twice the amount of everything and is bullet proof. I have that is 18 y/o and I got another one here when it went on sale. Wait, are you having a sale!

      Simple and Great

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This duffel is perfect for traveling when a roller bag will either be annoying or just not helpful. It is big enough to fit quite a bit of stuff, but small enough that it isn't totally absurd to wear as a backpack when loaded up. Great for international traveling when you need to be mobile, or for quick trips when you just need t throw stuff in the car. I have a pickup truck, so I also love that the material can fend off light rain when my stuff is in the bed. The zippers will let water in for sure so not approved for downpours/long exposure to water, but if you're driving along and it starts t sprinkle it's nice to not have to panick.

      Unanswered Question

Has anyone taken this on Ryanair? I know the demensions are slightly bigger then the carry on limit, but if you pack light can you make it fit?

This DRW coating is not explained. Please elaborate.
Is this duffel waterproof? Can it be made waterproof? If so what to use for waterproofing?

Hi , has anyone taken this bag as carry on luggage in a plane? Do you know if it's too big? Many thanks!

      Unanswered Question

What are the interior colors and how dark/light is it for the interior of all the duffle colors available including classic red? I'm looking for interior colors that are light so it is easier to find things. I don't want to be lost in a "black hole"!

      Unanswered Question

Can a single shoulder strap be purchased separately? Or can the backpack strap be utilized as a shoulder strap?

Does this bag have the traditional single over the shoulder strap or just the backpack style straps?

      Best Answer

i had the same question and eventually figured out that the bottom end of the backpack strap (opposite the clipped end) slides diagonally through the plastic part attached to the bag. Hope that makes sense

      Is the 60L carry-on size?

      Agnes,

Most US carry-on restrictions are in the neighborhood of 22" x 14" x 9" -- the 60L Black Hole is ~25" x 13" x 10". I've used it as a carry-on five or six times, but not fully packed. If it were 100% full, packed to the gills, you might not get away with it, but for the most part, I'd say yes, it'll work fine as a carry-on.

Let me know if you have any other questions-- I'd be happy to help! I can be reached via email at llabar@backcountry.com or 801.736.6399.

I packed mine to the gills, and though it was about 2.5 inches over the total restriction for American Airlines, no one said a word to me about it, maybe because I had it on my back, and most backpacks are well within guidelines. So for me, this was awesome as a carry on, and I loved getting to use it as a "backpack". But beware that different airlines have different restrictions and also have an up-charge if you claim it as a checked bag AT the airport (rather than doing it online beforehand). But some airlines also let things slide. Worst case scenario, they may tell you it's too big at the gate--just take a couple things out of it and squeeze it down to make it fit in their little size-tester-thingamajigs (something you can't do with a boxy suitcase)--it can surely take the rough handling! :) Good luck!!!

Wondering why they went to 900d from the previous version that is 1200d and how that is heavier duty than the previous version.

Hello uraudi, what a good question. The previous model was made with 14.7-oz. 1,200-denier 100% polyester, whereas the new model is made with 15-oz. 900-denier 100% polyester ripstop. The fabric's weight does affect abrasion resistance, so the newer model is made with "ripstop" polyester, whereas the previous model--though coming in at 1200d--is not listed as ripstop (ripstop refers to the weaving of fibers into the fabric into a diamond or square shape that, when punctured or torn, are better able to stop the tear from growing). You can actually see the difference in the fabric, with the one the right being the new, 900d polyester ripstop (see the characteristic ripstop squares?) with the one on the left being the older model. So, the bottom line is the integrity might be even better in the new model, despite the difference in denier.

      I hope that helps!

What are the differences between this and the previous version other than a $10 difference. It also looks like the external attachment points are shifted a bit. Anything else?

great question. The Black Hole bags were fully redesigned for this season.

      Here are the updates:

      New more durable fabric.

Updated pack strap interface - more secure and easier to take on and off

      Internal compression straps

The entire bag self stuffs into the front pocket

(we should have a video available soon detailing all of the updates as well)
