While some might beg to differ, there's nothing quite as gnarly as sucking down a mosquito along with a big gulp of coffee. Thankfully, the Nemo Equipment Inc Bugout Tarp eliminates the off chance of you noshing on one of those unanticipated protein snacks with its bug-free construction. As its name indicates, the Bugout sets up like a tarp but is equipped with 360-degree protection while the ripstop roof is fashioned with a polyurethane coating, in turn making it a convenient shelter from precipitation.

Wish it didn’t leak
Bought for July 2022 trip to BWCA as I knew mosquitoes would be bad. Easy to set up. Second day at a base camp had rain/2 separate thunderstorms. Top tarp leaked quite a bit over all areas. Rain was moderate to heavy at times but top tarp NOT waterproof. Quite disappointed as this was it’s first use. Does keep most bugs out, but some still got in, I assume either when people entered/exited or under side screen walls when wind blew and gaps appeared at bottom of walls. Wish there were more stake out loops along side mesh walls to keep that from happening. Not much head room at low corners, making those areas hard to use for much. Overall, pretty good, but SURE wish it did not leak with rain. Makes it much less functional!

Good but not great; Leaks!
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Could be really great but on first trip with this Nemo bug shelter to BWCA found these flaws: 1. Top is NOT waterproof. Leaked a lot during moderate and heavy rain. Not just from seams, but lots of water droplets coming right through fabric. And not just in one or two spots, but all over the top tarp. This was a major disappointment to say the least. 2. Should have more stake-out loops at bottom of screen walls. Only one in center of each wall and then some at corners. Would be good to have 3 or 4 loops along each side mesh wall at the bottom. In wind, side walls blow around and up off the ground, especially if area is not perfectly flat. Kept out ~90-95% of bugs, but some mosquitos still get in. Kept out ~95% of rain, meaning in moderate rain, you still get wet.

Must Have for Buggy Spots
This is an all time great piece of kit for camping in buggy places. I've taken it to BWCA (and other places) lots of times and would not go back without the Bugout. Takes just a few minutes to put up, bugs are gone, wind is significantly reduced, and can enjoy an evening in peace. I notice some reviewers have complained of tearout around the corners--we haven't had that problem and have used it for years. I'd guess we have set it up at at least 100 campsites and it has seen heavy winds, rain, etc. Not sure what has caused some to have issues but good to hear Nemo will repair. The sloped setup of the Bugout is the right design. It allows you to angle corners down into a prevailing wind, and ensures rain will run off. As is often the case with outdoor gear, I've added a few modifications/improvements that would be nice to have out of the box. 1. I've sewn in a clothes line underneath the center in order to hang dish towels, wet shirts, etc. This is a tarp first and foremost and it's job is to keep things dry. 2. I've sewn some loops underneath in order to hang lights/light strings. Note: If you sew something in, you'll need to seal the hole in order to keep water out. It would be cool if Nemo could add at least some extra loops knowing that during a rainy/wet trip, you pretty much live in this thing. Finally, as this has been used heavily, over time we have experienced occasional pinhole leaks. I don't expect that a tarp will be leak-free forever based on the way we used it. A little Tenacious Tape (or in a pinch, duct tape--never go camping without duct tape) should fix the issue and get you home dry. Thanks Nemo, the Bugout is awesome.

Nice lightweight versatile shelter ? great for use in the muggy, buggy southeast! It's a solid upgrade for the cowboy campers out there that don't want to get eaten by bugs all night, but enjoy a bit more of an open sleep experience.

A must have
I did a 3 week solo canoe/camping/fishing trip to the boundarie waters in minnesota in June of 2021. A bucket list trip for sure and the bugs, wind and 5 or 6 storms were no problem with the bug out tarp. One of the best pieces of gear I've ever purchased

plenty large
So i would say this does what its supposed to do, only thing, i wish they had the 9x9 still. It is quite large for the bwca but would work great for car camping.

Easy to use Screen shelter
I've had the Bugout Room Screen tarp for a few years now. I Like the lightweight and packable design. We did not get any poles with our set up, but I think that might be a good option to add. Usually we don't have a lot of problems finding appropriate trees to tie out the four corners in northern Minnesota camping areas. I would like to see an option that would make it easier to drain water off the top when it is pouring rain, so maybe that's another possibility for a use of expandable poles. The large design is great for a group to get out of the sun and or rain as needed. It's also nice to have the screen zipper down and help keep out the mosquitoes after a wet summer time. I love have it on all of our trips to make living in the outdoors more comfortable.

Keeps Mosquitos and Rain Out...
I love Nemo products! The Bugout Screen Room kept the mosquitos out for a month-long van camping trip through British Columbia and Alaska. The mosquitos were so bad at night that we could not cook dinner or eat outside without the BugOUt Screen Room. However, the grommet where the tarp poles attach ripped. I sent it back to Nemo and had it professionally repaired. We lightly used it on a few more camping trips and it ripped again. It does a great job at keeping bugs out but does not appear to be able to withstand being used in conjunction with tarp poles.

Roof Leaks water
We bought this 12 x 12 for our trip to the BWCA. It works well to keep bugs out but when it rains water pools up in little beads on the ceiling and constantly drips down. In order to prevent this we have to place a tarp on top of the roof to keep the water from coming in.

Great!
Bought the 12x12 just befire a recent BWCA trip; liked the larger size: if I need to I can set up my 7x9 for man tent inside and still have room to roam. It performed great on our trip, keeping out rain and bugs. It can be challenging to find enough room at many BWCA campsites with a 17' diagonal, and we had to get creative at our first site. At our 2nd campsite there were no tent pads smooth enough to sleep on that fit our tent so we set up the Bug Out and slept under that. Best sleep we had! It packs down to roughly the same size and weight as my 4 man tent. I added 2 adjustable alum poles from MSR for the lower corners and they worked great.
