Now's the time.

Road tubeless has impressed us beyond belief and we truly feel like the wheel and tire technology has improved to the point that we really don't care to use an inner tube going forward. Ditching the tube lowers the rolling resistance so you can go faster with less effort. It also allows for lower tire pressure to be utilized for a more comfortable ride and better traction. Then there's the reduced risk of punctures which we have really come to enjoy on goathead riddled bike lanes and paths. We think it's time for everyone to experience road tubeless and with wheels like Mavic's Tubeless Cosmic Elite UST Wheelset, there's no reason not to.

We're amazed at the performance that the Cosmic Elite packs in and had to do a double take to make sure the price was for a wheelset, especially when you consider that price includes tires. Besides the smoother ride and improved puncture resistance that comes from running sealant, tubeless affords a lighter weight set up, by about 40 grams per wheel, for snappier climbing and accelerating.

Cosmic wheels have always had a touch of aero and Mavic, through wind tunnel testing, creates a 30mm deep rim profile that boosts aero performance without compromising stability in crosswinds. Bladed straight pull spokes and aero profile hubs further help you cheat the wind. The aluminum rims are a pleasant departure from carbon rims in that the braking is powerful and predictable. Mavic tunes the thickness of the rim wall to optimize stiffness, strength, and weight. A reinforced lower rim wall gives it incredible resistance and durability. The S6000 alloy creates a very light yet strong rim extrusion that is arc welded using Mavic's SUP process. The seam is then milled for a smooth finish that cannot be detected while braking. Mavic then CNC machines the braking surface with a process known as UB Control to further improve friction with the pads to get you slowed down faster. The 17mm inner width pairs perfect with the included 25mm wide tires and anything up to around 32mm if your bike and brakes have room to spare.

Pedaling effort is transferred into forward motion with the FTS-L freehub, a tried and true system that is light, smooth, and easy to service. Finally, the Cosmic Elites come ready to go tubeless with Yksion Pro UST tires, sealant, a syringe, tubeless tape, and valves to help you get the most from the tubeless setup.

Great Wheels/Tires, Great Value

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Over 2000 miles on these since June. Normally would be switching wheelsets up but these so much better than wheels with Conti 4000s that I even commute on them. Tubeless ride is smooth leading to improved efficiency and comfort especially on chip seal or deteriorating roads. Cornering is remarkable. There is a winding downhill that I always braked on before. I have now cleaned 3 times with these wheels and tires. No flats yet - one small puncture with a quick reseal on the front. Didn't even have to stop to add air the seal was so quick (might have had to if puncture had been on the rear - lost about 10 PSI.) Wheels are staying true and round, mounting was a piece of cake and the price, $450, with tires selling separately for $75 each was killer. I am 140 lbs and riding an older Cervelo R3.

Mavic makes road tubeless easy

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I only have one ride on these, but they are solid and smooth rolling wheels. Mavic makes your decision to try tubeless easy by including everything you need: tires, valves, sealant. Mine even came set up with the tires and valves mounted. All I needed to do was add the sealant (they even include a nifty sealant injection system). These are not light wheels. They are a full 3/4 lb heavier than my Dura Ace C24s. I'm sure this will deter 90% of wheel shoppers from buying them. But it shouldn't. These would make a great set of everyday wheels for anybody who rides a few times a week. And for somebody like me who does not race and just wants to ride with friends it's a great option. Like I said, they are very smooth wheels. The lack of rolling resistance from the tubeless setup makes up for some of the weight penalty. You can run 80 psi in these and it really helps smooth out rough roads. Something to be aware of - the included Yksion tires are claimed to be 25c but seem closer to 23c.
