Just not the right pack for me. I like the pack itself and the suspension of the pack as well. But in conjunction just wasn't a fan. The pack tends to have more room for gear than the straps can comfortably carry. If you can pack light or not fill the pack, the runners vest style straps work great!

So far so good. I like that it's waterproof, and I think it will be good for the alpine overnight trips I have planned. I may get tired of rolling up and clipping the top to close it, compared to other bags that use a drawstring to close the main compartment. But if it maintains its waterproof qualities, this kind of closure is easier to manage than a pack cover in the rain. It's comfortable on the back but with limited padding, about what you'd expect for a lightweight pack of this size.

Great mountaineering and ski touring pack with a caveat

Pros: The pack is just the right size for a technical day of mountaineering or ski touring on glaciers. The main compartment and the top brain are absolutely cavernous. You can easily fit all of your gear in there. The suspension system is comfortable and easy to adjust. It's great to see gear loops on the hip belt although a small hip pocket on one side would be beneficial to store sunscreen and small tools. Caveat: If using the pack for ski touring, it would be best to have a separate avalanche safety tool compartment. It's not a deal breaker on personal days but pains me when I'm working in the field as I end up pulling my shovel and probe all the time. I'd like to see some sort of helmet carry included with the bag as most competitors do include one. I believe that is sold separately. And finally, the biggest con: when strapping your helmet to the front of the pack (on the daisy chains), the buckle that secures the brain is hidden under your helmet. Essentially, you've got to reach blindly underneath the helmet to secure the brain which is especially hard to execute with cold hands. That's a crucial design flaw, but I something I can live with for the time being. Relocating the buckle to the side of the pack (on either side) would alleviate this issue.

One size fits all

I have the earlier but similar Trion Guide 35+7...(came in one size). I'm 6' x 155lbs... the pack works for me & I've used it a lot... but it feels like my back is just slightly too long for proper fit. This newer version seems to lack "floating" removable lid--that would be deal-breaker, 'though seems to be a "trend" for packs of this size/class.

Excellent for hauling gear to the crag or the gym.

Fantastic Pack! If you're filling it with puffy jackets.

This is a really great pack, love the mostly waterproof design with the rolltop, love the removable lid, and if you've got under 20 lbs in it like I did for a couple of backpacking trips, it carries really well and I love the vest style shoulder straps. once you start loading it up with crampons, ice axes, ropes and other gear however, this very light suspension system really starts to suck. Especially for a 40l mountaineering pack this thing really does not carry weight well. I imagine the 30l or the 15l would be really great, but I did not feel like I could use all of the space in this pack without annihilating my traps.

Solid bag for ice climbing (as an example). Hip strap feels a bit flimsy and doesn't carry as much weight comfortably when fully loaded

fits well, and carries heavy loads with comfort. I dont like the roll top, as it tends to eat up a significant amount of pack volume, and single the outer clip for holding the brain down is poorly placed. a double clip on either side of the top of the brain instead of in the center of the top would have worked better. I also would have liked to see some gear loops on the hip belt.

This is my first MAMMUT product, and the first 38L pack I've bought in years. I use the Velcro loops to hold my collapsible fly rods and tube. This is not a commuter pack, but the inner orange pouch will hold a laptop or wilderness scientific device. The "H2O" hole was an unexpected delight, I can put a hydration bladder in the orange pouch and a run tube up through the hole. The pack can hold my tent, mess kit, jetboil system, and a few cooking pots. Since it is dumb to hike or climb alone the person you are with can carry whatever else needs to be carried. It's a great pack, and lets admit no matter what kind of pack any of us have had we always create work-arounds to attach something to our packs.

Versatile pack designed for alpine adventures

Great lightweight sturdy pack specifically designed for ice climbing and mountaineering. If you are an efficient packer, you can also use it for weekend backpacking. Weight distribution is good. This is my new go-to pack for climbing and backpacking trips. It can be used for skiing as well. However, I prefer keeping my avy gear in a separate compartment and I use the Osprey Kamber 42 for ski mountaineering.
