If only all approaches were a quick 2-minute jaunt from the parking lot, but some of the most iconic lines are miles from the road. When that's the case, leave the sandals in the car and slip on a pair of the Fivetennie Approach Shoe from Five Ten. With a super grippy outsole and climbing zone on the toe, the Fivetennie's are stable on scree and precise on low-angle terrain. The sock liner hugs the foot for security and comfort so the approach feels less like a slog and more like a walk in the woods. Five Ten's updated retro design helps this shoe transition from the crag to the brewery afterwards so you can celebrate sending your project with friends.

More Casual Shoe than Approach Shoe
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- 10
- Height:
- 5' 11"
- Weight:

I bought the 5.10 Five Tennie after years of wearing various other long-suffering approach shoes. My approach shoes get used for the long approaches into the backcountry, the treacherous descents, the 4th and low 5th class ledge systems, and occasionally, crack climbing when my feet are too sore for tight shoes. Unfortunately, the Five Tennie is well suited for none of these things. They fit like a comfortable skateboarding shoe, and are about as appropriate for long hikes. Their leather outer does not breathe well, but it does stand up to a fair amount of abuse. While the Stealth rubber is incredibly sticky, the shoe does not have the rigidity or support structure to translate that friction into meaningful edging or smearing capability. They don’t perform terribly well in cracks either, likely owing to their wide toe box and the very small rubber toe cap they’ve been equipped with. All in all, the Five Tennie is best suited for casual wear or for bouldering outings. For casual purposes, they’re great - aesthetic and comfortable. As a traditional approach shoe however - one to be used for the long miles, low 5th sections, and steep descents - they do not perform well. If a casual shoe is your aim, there's one last thing to note: they run about a full size large.

Runs way too large

- 7

I wear I size 7 1/2 normally. That was too large, I sent it back ordered a 7 it was still too large. They don’t have 6 1/2 in stock so I will never be able to put them to the test. They are really light weight, but I didn’t understand the rubber not covering the entire toe area. Seems kind of pointless. Seems like adidas is trying to incorporate there style into outdoor shoes but they will never be able to do accomplish what five ten was making on their own. Honestly, I could assume the rubber on the bottom wouldn’t help you much on rocks, and if it did, it wouldn’t last long. But that’s just an assumption.

Great quality approach shoe
The build quality of the five tennie is great, it is overall a solid approach shoe for getting to the crag and in and around the city. Would reccomend

Versatile
These have been fab. A bit of a cross between my old guide tennies and access shoes. I bought my usual shoe size and they are a good fit for comfort but if you plan on doing a lot of climbing in them I'd go half a size down. The back of the shoe is quite low so a thick insole can bring your foot up a bit high for it. The rubber is lovely and sticky and the shoe feels very supportive.

Great Look, Too Large
- Familiarity:

I agree with many of the other reviewers that this shoe runs extremely big. The look of the shoe is great, and I love the sticky soles. However, the size 6 had an extra inch of space in the toe bed, so even if I could find a 5.5, those are only .6 cm smaller, which means that it would need to be made in a size 5 to fit women who typically wear a 6, or 36 euro. Darn shame, Adidas!

Love these !
The soles are like Velcro on my MTB Flat pedals, such a big improvement on normal runners as I’m a newbie and not ready for clip in shoes yet! They are gorgeous , if I wasn’t trying to keep the soles perfect for the bike I would wear them as a casual shoe aswell
