Out of Black Diamond's massive collection of insulated jackets, the First Light Stretch Hooded Jacket is by far the most breathable insulators. Fit for alpine climbs, backcountry tours, and moving fast in cold mountains, its Primaloft Silver Active insulation is performance-ready to keep us warm when we're working up a sweat. Black Diamond designed the insulation in Schoeller softshell fabric for active-inspired stretch and water-resistance that sheds snowflakes and light moisture. The jacket's regular fit includes underarm gussets to ensure freedom of movement on the mountain, and there are adjustments at the hem and climbing helmet-compatible hood for a snug fit.

I absolutely love the fit and color (red/black). It's trim, but not restrictive and has quite a bit of stretch. As much as I wanted to keep it, I did end up returning it because whenever I put it on, I noticed the lining got pushed out of the cuffs. It's small and seemingly insignificant, but it drove me nuts and would have bothered me if I had to stuff it back in the sleeves every time I put it on. I'm guessing it's because the lining isn't quite as slick as my Atom or other BD jacket.

First impressions were that this was way more LIGHT and not as insulating as I expected it to be. It is definitely one of my lightest insulating jackets and packs down relatively small, not bulky at all. However... man I love this jacket! Even though is lightweight, it keeps me warm! I really wanted to test its insulation/breathability so I went out mountain biking with it, with just one long sleeve thin dri-fit shirt underneath. It was night, 35F-40F temps out, and the jacket was doing its work by keeping me warm. Once running and my body heated up... this jacket performed flawlessly. Never felt suffocated, or extra warm, or damp inside or anything. It cuts through the wind really well too! I am 5'10, 140lbs, ordered a size SMALL... and this fits on the slim side. Will not be able to layer down much in this one, but I think it will not be necessary. This was one good investment. Cheers Black Diamond!

Bought as a gift, but have feedback to share. Although I haven't had a whole season to test the jacket, I have been impressed with the time I have had it. My biggest test was wearing it while snowshoeing into a yurt while pulling a sled. It was a warm day, probably ~45° F and I was pulling a fair amount of weight, mostly up hill. It did a great job breathing and I didn't over heat. I am sold. True to size, or just a tad large.
