Why We Like The Black Diamond Distance 8L Backpack
For our ultra-distance training runs and semi-supported alpine races, the Black Diamond Distance 8L Backpack helps us stay prepared for changing conditions and far-flung aid stations. The multiple pockets organize our layers, fuel, creams, and poles, while the dual side compression straps pull it all in close. We enjoy a comfortable, low-bounce carry thanks to the stretchy side wings delivering a body-hugging fit that still lets our lungs expand on climbs and through the final kick.

Great fast and light pack
I have primarily been using this pack for fast and light ski touring bag, but I can easily see this replacing my other Rock Blitz 15 for trail us and day hikes. Very comfortable.

Great Bag
Using this bag for long winter runs (10-20 miles) in the Midwest and has the right amount of room for emergency layers, food, and water. Love that the back panel has some water resistance so any sweat doesn't get into the main compartment, keeping those items dry. Side and chest pockets are well thought out and easy to access but I don't worry about anything falling out. Easy on and off and quick to open the main compartment but it closes well. My only gripe is I am in between the Medium and Large (5'10", 180 lbs, 39" at torso). Ordered the Large but it was *just* too loose (sternum buckles had 1" or so between them and side 'wings' had a gap between my sides) and the Medium is almost maxed out (sternum straps have about 1 1/2" of tail left) with basic layers on. Would rather have it be a little snug and not bounce around though.

No running pack is perfect, but...
I have gen1 of this pack and have beaten it (and myself) hard. Over the course of many miles, yes there are things that you discover can be improved. So improve them yourself! To note, if the compression cords are too long simply cut them and tie them back together with opposing fisherman's knots. That will tidy things up and give a nice little knob to pull on. I used small red/reflective accessory cord to tie loops around the little hidden tabs to open the main compartment so it is quick and easy every time (esp. in the dark). Customize it yourself and you will love it even more, but most importantly this little pack is bomber! It still looks new after tons of use and it has the perfect capacity for a long day out: 2x 500ml flasks, first aid kit, head lamp, light puffy, light shell, beanie and sun hat, gloves, spare socks, micro towel, inreach, phone and 3000 calories. BD got this pack right, and it looks like gen2 is even better with expanded front pockets. Thanks BD!

Excellent Pack
Overall, the Distance 8 pack is as close as it gets to perfect. I picked up the Distance 8 to replace one of my other run packs; after owning the Distance 15 (which isn’t quite as impressive as this model). The feature set is superb, materials are excellent, and the minor complaints I have with the Distance 15 don’t really apply to a pack of this size. Still, you might want to read my review of the Distance 15 (especially if you use a reservoir). Pros on this pack vs other packs I’ve owned, are the shoulder straps and the taped edges, pocketing, materials, compression system, and pole sleeves. Fit and usability are superb. Cons are minimal, but if I’m really being nitpicky, the compression system cords are too long. When the pack is fully filled, I have a several inches of cord hanging loose. It just seems like too much and is further compounded when you do need compress the pack. Also, I have issues with the reservoir system, but on this pack I’m using soft flasks, so those concerns have been negated. As I mentioned, this is an excellent pack; I highly recommend.

Just what I wanted
I've always wanted a light pack that doesn't flop around when I try to go light and fast! This fits the bill. Now I can romp around in the Sierras without a hefty pack. It also isn't inconvenient to go without stuff in the pack for a running vest. 10/10 would romp with again

Fundamental Design flaw
I own both this ABC the larger 15L option. I was really hoping these packs represented the solution I was looking for: a large volume alpine running pack for those linking peaks above treeline at elevations between 12-14,000 ft. Unfortunately, these packs were designed incorrectly for this IMO. The crucial mistake being that your load will be sitting behind your center of gravity. Meaning that every step, stride, hop, etc will be felt by the runner as ‘bounce’ Also, the soft flask pockets are nearly impossible to fit anything into, black diamond flasks were not included and always seem to be out of stock. The cellphone pocket does not fit a cellphone, etc. Had very high hopes for these packs; unfortunately I think they need to go back to the drawing board and maybe look at more Salomon designs. Probably works very well for climbing. Not for running though.

Gen 2 Distance 8
Trail running with the older Distance 4 I was already used to the quick pole system, there’s 2 locations to store the poles, I wanted more volume for longer outings in the backcountry for those 20+ milers, pack fits snug, carrying a soft flask or two up front and sits higher to drink from without removing bottles, a 50ounce insulated bladder in the pocket, dry sack bags for extra calories, just keeps everything organized. Look forward to many more days ahead out on the trail.
