Why We Like The Black Diamond Dawn Patrol Hybrid Shell Jacket
The Dawn Patrol Hybrid Shell is Black Diamond's backcountry-specific ski jacket that feels equally comfortable on the uphill as it does on the downhill, especially when it's powdery out there. Its BD.dry membrane is extremely waterproof, breathable, and even windproof. Black Diamond also added GTT's Empel Breathable Water Protection Technology, which is a water- and PFC-free DWR that's more durable and performs better than the competition. Softshell paneling provides extra breathable and a four-way stretch in key areas to keep comfy on the skin track.

Nicely made, loads of features. As previously mentioned, soft shell panels on the back and under the arms are not waterproof. So, this is a jacket for fair weather and spring ski tours.

Great light jacket
Bought this jacket for a spring backpacking trip when temps range from 30’s to 50’s. This jacket served great as an outer shell in the cool weather. Very comfortable and flexible with great ventilation. Only con is the position of the pockets. The pockets are located in your breast rather than at your side. Overall great jacket for autumn and spring time trips

Soft and comfy compare to the hard shells. Great on wind blocking. 100% satisfied

Perfect
I needed a shell for touring, and this has all of the bells and whistles that I could ask for. Layering makes much more sense than wearing an insulated jacket on the slopes or in the backcountry, and this jacket is a great choice for a shell.

Breathable and Comfortable on lthru Hikes
did a thru hike at the appalachians and with the wet and cold weather, this jacket never failed to keep me dry and comfortable the whole trip and without having the feeling of restriction and a moist back.

Not great, but pretty darn good.
After a few backcountry ski tours, I like this shell quite a bit, with only one real complaint. Pros: looks good, “skin” pockets are nice for keeping spare gloves handy and warm, very breathable yet stops wind and blowing snow. Medium size fits me well and allows a vest or light fleece jacket underneath (5’9” 160lbs). Con: the dual front zipper, mesh vent system is un-needed complexity. It doesn’t vent better than just pulling the zipper down on a conventional jacket.

Good wind protection
- Size Bought:
- Large (I am 6 feet 190 lbs)
I love the lightweight yet awesome protection from the wind and snow. I wish the zippers slid a little easier (it catches at the upper chest level if I'm not careful how I zip it). Fits a little on the larger side, but it just allows me to wear lower layers.

Great Hybrid Shell for a variety of activities
Mainly bought this shell for the color because let's face it - look good, feel good, ski good. But it also fills a critical hole in my arsenal of performance jackets for those days when you're not sure exactly what the weather will hold... which is most days in the mountains! As a multi-sport adventurer, I think this jacket will be equally at home touring, cross-country skiing, and perhaps even at the crag for some cold weather climbing. Pleasantly stretchy, feels durable so I'm not worried about it ripping rubbing up against something. The dual zipper/venting feature is really nice, I'm interested to see this in action. The thumb loops (see photo) are thin and laser cut. My first thought was I wish they were softer material, but it might be nice for weather resistance and not being bulky.

Excellent Jacket but Beware Limitations
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- M

This is a fantastic jacket with amazing venting options (I love the dual front zipper, which I've never seen before). The one potential limitation, which I didn't fully understand when I bought it, is that only the fabric on the back of the jacket and underarms is not waterproof/breathable; it's a non waterproof fabric treated with a DWR. So, do not buy this jacket if you're planning to stay dry in wet conditions.
