The bib-free Assos H.laalalaiShorts_s7 Lady Shorts showcase Assos' goldenGate construction method, a welcome addition to the Swiss manufacturer's women's line since it may be our favorite recent advancement in cycling shorts technology. GoldenGate involves attaching the chamois at the front and rear, leaving the sides free to float so the chamois moves with your body instead of against it. This effectively relocates friction from the skin/chamois interface to the chamois/shorts, all but eliminating skin irritation in that most sensitive of areas. We're starting to see this feature crop up in other manufacturers' lines but—true to the precedent of history—Assos did it first and continues to do it better.
The rest of the shorts are what you would expect from the self-styled "shorts company," with a compressive, durable fabric arranged anatomically. Your body fits into the shorts, rather than the shorts deforming to fit your body. That keeps all the disparate elements of the shorts—from the forgiving inserts at the leg openings to the gently compressive waistband—in the places where they belong while still affording unfettered movement in the saddle.
The lack of bibs doesn't just address the difficulty of reconciling bib straps with a woman's anatomy. It also lets the H.laalalaiShorts transcend the barriers of warm-weather imposed on other shorts. They're useful as a base layer when temperatures and precipitation start falling, because you can wear them beneath tights without adding undue bulk or interfering with your torso layering strategy. When the weather heads south, you won't be stuck with a terry-cloth winter chamois. Considering that Assos is known as "the shorts company" for a reason, that's a welcome revelation.
In addition to the goldenGate tech mentioned above, the H.laalalaiShorts bring to women's-specific kit the same _s7 chamois technology found throughout Assos' men's line. At the insert's heart is an 8mm-thick memoryFoam material with remarkable return properties, so it quickly resumes its original position and shape after deformation. This essentially fills the gaps between body and chamois created by your pedal stroke while your weight shifts throughout the cycling motions. As you can imagine, the free-floating, goldenGate design also facilitates this gap-free fit, which keeps contact constant to avoid chafing.
Finally, the superAir and waffle construction of the insert's first two layers warrant special attention, as they increase breathability and shed weight through negative space. They also effectively increase the material's surface area, transporting moisture away from your skin to accelerate drying for hours of comfort that go beyond what the insert's low weight would suggest.

They run small, but they’re great shorts
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I got 3 pairs of these same shorts 7 years ago, and I’m still wearing them. I just bought 4 new pairs because they were 50% off. In addition to how long they last, I especially like that the legs never roll up, the chamois is really comfy, especially on long rides when it really matters, and the waistband, and the length is just a few inches above my knees which I prefer. Very well made, too. I normally wear a small in most riding shorts, but I definitely need a medium in these.

Best Endurance Shorts
- Familiarity:

These are my favorite shorts. I own 2 and will buy more. My riding buddy and I both use these and we ride every weekend 125-200 miles. Padding just right for the long rides. As one review says not cut for a women. I would agree if the butt is wide, otherwise fit perfect the same as other Assos shorts.

Great for long rides and lots of mileage

I ride endurance road, gravel and mountain and i do a lot of bicycle touring as well. I was hesitant to purchase these b/c of the mixed reviews. However, I ended up purchasing them anyway and I am so glad I did. These are exactly what I need for bike touring and long days in the saddle. The chamois is incredibly comfortable and has thicker padding that goes higher up in the front of the short compared to some of the others I tried on. I probably won't wear these for shorter distances and will save them for 50+ miles and long trips. These shorts have good compression; they are not see-through (very important). The waist is almost a high-rise but not quite and If I were to make one improvement to this short, I'd make them high rise. I cannot wait to test these out in the real world.

Have worn these for 150ish miles so far and love them. Initially I was a bit concerned with the fit - they felt a bit small for a medium, but I decided not to return them because large usually winds up too big on me. Also, the softer waistband tends to roll down when sitting in a normal chair if you have any gut to speak of (I do - such is the desk job life). Fortunately, the moment you get on the bike, everything feels just right. The small-ish sizing keeps the chamois in place though it isn't fully fastened to the shorts, and the waistband is super comfortable, doesn't dig in, and has no rolling issues when riding. There are no poorly placed seams, at least on me. The chamois keeps my ?regions? super comfortable, even when on the bike for 3+ hours. Big improvement over my old pairs.
