Why We Like The Weston Hatchet Splitboard

There's fresh snow and the lift lines are already out of control. Luckily, our car's got four-wheel drive and our quiver has the Weston Hatchet Splitboard ready to go. This short-and-wide split has enough float to handle the deepest stashes while staying nimble enough for quick turns through the trees. We love its stabilizing camber profile and the way it gets us up and down the mountain confidently. A little extra weight at the tail, rocker on each tip, and a directional taper boost buoyancy even further.

Details

  • Backcountry split with volume-shift design for unbelievable float
  • Multi-radial camber for edge hold on carves and up the skin track
  • Directional twin shape with rockered tips for smooth turn initiation
  • Mid-stiff flex is playful but reactive enough for deep snow
  • Poplar-bamboo core is light and damping, ideal in the backcountry
  • Karakoram UltraClips create a solid chatter-free board feel
  • Shifted touring bracket increases tail weight for maneuverability
  • Short-and-wide snowboard designed to be ridden at a shorter, nimbler length

When the boys hmu and say we’re doing sled laps and booters in the backcountry this is my go to board. Love being able to ride more comfortably switch in the powder with a ton of wide surface area and makes for plusher easier stomps off pillows and booters. Highly recommend if you wanna step your game up with some freestyle powder riding in the backcountry.

The Go To Split Now!

Was a bit hesitant riding a board this short. I'm 5'5" 155 lbs and was worried that a 152 would be too small considering I mostly ride lower angle pow in Colorado backcountry. I was pleasantly surprised that this board floated so well and effortlessly. Weston does make skins as well that pair with the split perfectly with a new-to-split system that is pretty common on the ski side and it is great to see more options for splits, especially with the unique shapes like this one.

I was a little hesitant to get this board in a 156 because I'm used to riding 160-163's but after demoing one at Brighton I was sold. They basically packed a park board into a short wide shape that is super fun and playful but actually floats in powder! I love twins and have been riding them for a couple of decades so when I ride direction boards in powder I miss that feel. This board feels like a twin in powder, but still floats like a bigger board. The thing I like most is there's no toe and heel drag!!! Even on my bigger, tapered pow boards I notice that my rear foot is always collecting snow and slowing me down. This wide deck keeps my toes and heels out of the snow where they should be, even when riding or landing switch. I also love how stable it is. I was worried that with such a short board it would be sketchy dropping cliffs, but this thing stomps landings. Long story short - forget what you though you knew about board length and width and try this volume shifted beauty. You might just fall in love!
