Terrible Fit

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I don't have wide feet. I do have collapsed arches, but other than that, I don't have weird shapes to my feet either. My insteps are medium to very slightly above medium height. All of this combines to say, if a shoe is anywhere close to "regular fit," it would probably fit me. These boots didn't.

Others already touched on the terrible lacing system so I won't beat a dead horse. What I found terrible is how tight (note: not snug, which is proper) these boots are. The heels are fine. The toe box is also a fairly proper, maybe even roomy fit. But the quarter and the instep is absolutely terrible, about the worst fit I've ever had the displeasure of putting on my feet.

Trying these bare feet. The side of the feet felt tight. Furthermore, the insteps were highly uncomfortable, almost painful. I tried playing with the lacing system to no avail. This is when I discovered that the tongue of the boot is stitched to the upper, which while I'm sure helps insulation and waterproofing, means an inappropriately tight boots will not allow any give to relieve discomfort. I couldn't wait to get them off my feet. I'm sure if I tried them with even thin socks, they'd be even worse.

Which makes me wonder. I'm not a wide foot and I don't have high insteps. If I can't even fit into these boots comfortably, who did Vasque make these for? What's the target market?

Fit fine, lacing system isn't

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 10.5

I ordered the 10.5, beluga old gold is fine, colour is fine...the fit was tight initially, mostly across the forefoot, have now moulded and stretched where needed. If anything i'd go half a size down if you intend to really use these boots for the purpose they were built.
At first the heel cup felt loose with that "sloshing" feeling. Lashing down the laces across the forefoot and the ankle bite solved for this and the lacing system here works ok, but a hook system would enable different lacing options. My greatest frustration being that, like other reviews, the "neck" of the boot is narrow. I have wide feet (general EEE last (102mm)), regardless of how loose the laces, these are still tough boots to slide on. Once on, laces tightened and lashed down (recommend a surgeons knot), particularly pushing the heel into the back of the boot, the boot work well. Remembering these aren't "everyday wear to the shops", or urban type shoes...they are for serious hiking in tough cold conditions. You put them on, they stay on for hours. That is what they're designed for. The lace loops however should be hooks and d-rings. When hiking through relatively flat terrain, its good to be able to loosen the ankle hold and let your feet "breathe". the lacing system doesn't allow this.
The sole and grip pattern is terrific...mud, snow, slush, even slippery basalt rocks...these work well.
Temperature wise, only pushed them to minus 5c, but toasty warm nonetheless after 5 hours of hiking through various terrain.
Given the need to really tighten the boot to get the best fit, the longevity of the top four lace loops/eyelets will be the challenge.
These are high ankle fitting boots. Push through the "rubbing" issues on the ankle and shin bone from the cuff pressure. Overall can't complain about this boot. Lace hooks would see it rank better. For the price, these boots function as intended.

Vasque Snowburban UltraDry

Warm fit but very poor lacing system

I really tried to like this boot but could never get my feet secure in them. The lacing system unlike most high top systems is tied in completely to the top so in order to attempt to tighten it you have to reef it at a few points. I was unable to do this so I am seeking out a traditional hook and tie style.

    Good boots - bad fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

These are great boots in overall build quality. The seem to be built like a rock and are very lightweight. Insulation feels a little on the cheaper end with the 400g Thinsulate feeling hard and not as comfy as I wished. I normally wear 14 in Asolos, 13 in regular shoes and wanted to give these a shot. Biggest complaints are the lacing system and the heel space.

The lacing system is really hard to tie properly and you can never tie to front of the foot enough to really hold your feet properly. This resulted in my foot moving too far ahead in the boots and my toes hitting the front of the boot.

My next complaint is with the heel space. I would say the boots are very spacious in the back and get narrower in the front. I have a narrow heel and in these boots they were moving side to side... something that on long hikes can get really uncomfortable and potentially lead to developing blisters.

    Very narrow at the forefoot

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 8.5

They look great, exactly what I was looking for. 3 stars mainly to alert buyers to the fit. I got the boots yesterday and tried them on with just a street sock (athletic crew sock). Very narrow forefoot. I usually wear a men's 7.5 or 8 in everything. 8s are sometimes still roomy, never tight. I ordered an 8.5 and it was squeezing my forefoot. I'd say true to length, because it was a little big that way, but very narrow across the ball of the foot.

Bummer, because they look like a very good winter activity boot for snowshoeing and moderate winter hikes. Not burley enough for more than instep crampons or serious kick stepping, but close. Definitely better than typical winter clunkers. I will need a different boot with a different shape.

    awesome boots

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 9.5

Its a versatile boot for cold weather, Can be used form everyday work to mid range mountaineering

    Outstanding Boot!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small

After buying 2 other pairs of boots this year that left my feet cold I decided to try these based on previous reviews. They were right! Best boots I ever bought. Keep my feet warm and dry. The only thin I hate about them is that there is NOTHING to hate!

    Dry Winter Boot

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

I've been wearing these the past few weeks in the snow throughout cities and parks. They've held up very well. I had to buy a half size up, which is typical for boots and my feet. They're still going through the break in period, but are performing well! If you want your feet dry and warm in the winter, pick a pair of these up and enjoy!

    Fantastic boot for winter trekking

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

The Vasque SNOWBURBAN ULTRADRY™ boot is insulated with 400g of 3M™ Thinsulate™ insulation which will keep your feet warm in most conditions down to roughly 0 degrees F.  Add to that the Vasque UltraDry system to keep your feet dry and you have a fantastic winter trekking or snowshoeing boot!

The Vasque SNOWBURBAN ULTRADRY™ boots are solid performing boots with plenty of insulation for most weather conditions, though I have not worn them enough to give a full temperature range just yet.  The rear of the boot has a notch built in to support the back strap of snowshoes and this was very handy!  The hook at the front of the laces did a great job of keeping the built-in snow gaiter on my snow pants fixed in place. The sole has a fairly aggressive tread pattern and performed very well, once I got to a point towards the end of the trek where I no longer needed snowshoes (though I was still walking on solid snow).

If you are looking to replace existing boots or planning to buy your first pair of boots for the winter, I would definitely recommend you give the Vasque SNOWBURBAN ULTRADRY boots strong consideration!

I have written a gear review with pictures on my blog page, located here:

    Excellent snowshoe boot

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

Needed a new pair of boots for snowshoeing, saw these and decided to try them. When I got them I thought they were going to be to tight the first time I wore them. Had on a pair of liner socks and a little bit heavier pair and they were fine. Did a five mile snowshoe hike and feet were warm comfortable and dry.

    Great winter boot

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small

I am very happy with these boots. I had to go up a size because they are a touch more narrow than other boots I have gotten at the same size but it allows me to add extra insulation if i need to and so far a pair of smartwool hiking socks are all I need. i have been using them as my daily go to work boots (I change footwear once i get in the office) I have taken them on 2 snowshoe trips and on winter camping trip and they kept my feet warm and dry.

Great Boots for a Photo Trip

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I needed a pair of warm, waterproof boots for use while in very cold parts of Japan recently. These boots filled the bill to the tee. They kept my feel warm while hiking above Nagano is sub feeling temperature and while standing around photographing the Snow Monkeys. On Japan's, Hokkaido Island we where standing around for hours in very cold weather photographing Crown Crane birds, Eagles and other wildlife My feet stayed "roast toasty" the entire time. I never had to add foot warmers or anything else, the boots kept my feet warm and always dry. I highly recommend these boots for cold weather hiking, photography or jet staying warm in cold weather. For my purpose they proved to be perfect!

    Nice boot....

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Warm comfortable out of the box.Not for on and off as they are a little slow to untie but on the flip side if you pull the laces straight up they cinch up fast and tight.105.00 dollar well worth the money boot

Warm and warm - awesome boot

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these mostly for snowshoeing and they have been even better than I was expecting. They're extremely comfortable - yet still a nice tight fit, an they provide a great amount of ankle support as well. I've used them several times on long snow hikes of eight hours/15 miles+ in below freezing temperatures, and my feet stayed completely warm and dry, without being uncomfortable whatsoever. Not only that, but they don't overheat when it's not cold. I would say they are totally waterproof, as I have stood in water just to test them and never felt anything leaking in. They have great traction as well - I've walked around on icy permanent snowfields and not had any trouble with feeling like I was going to slip. In my old shoes, I would have been halfway down the hill flat on my back...

These are awesome boots, the best I've ever owned. I would recommend them to anyone.

    Good traction & support

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Vasque knows how to make great boots. The soles provide superb traction on snow/ice/crust. I walk on snowy trails, snowshoe, and ride my winter bike with these. The ankle area is well constructed and very warm. The boot could be improved with a heat retaining/reflecting and or wool insole. More insulation in the toe area would help, too, especially for riding a winter bike or snowshoeing.

    Good lightweight boot

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've used this boot every day for a month now, I walk to work about a mile, my feet have stayed very warm and dry, we had a good snowstorm that gave us about 12" and the boot had no issues. I was concerned about the size of the boot being to big for every day use (I work retail sales and am on my feet all day) but my feet did not get tired and with my size 13 flat feet the boots were very light and comfy.

    Good lightweight boot

Good snow boot at good price

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've used the boot in light snow to walk around the yard and forest for about 1 or 2 hours with the kids. Feet stayed perfectly warm. Even stepped into the lake a couple times while cracking the ice at the edge. Inside of the shoe remained dry. About 10 years ago, I had a pair of Vasque Sundowner hiking boots that lasted me for over 5 years. I wore them down to the bone. Lets see if I get the same value out of this pair.

Do they come in a wide size? I need 12...

Do they come in a wide size? I need 12 wide. I already have a pair of vasque wasatch hiking boots in 12 wide that are awesome.

Vasque does make many of their shoes in wide, however, this is not one of the models in which that applies. This particular shoe comes in Men's Medium (width) sizes 7-12,13,& 14.
