Get ready, shreddy.

Suit up and get your pow pants on this winter with the North Face Powder Guide pants. They are ready to sink into chest-deep powder, skin into the backcountry, and traverse above treeline, so you can spend your snowy days happily dry while you send it down chutes and between precarious tree runs. Made from waterproof, breathable GoreTex, the Powder Guide pants are eager to get into the deep of it and keep water rolling off like they were made for frozen rain and torrential downpours, but hopefully it's just blower pow in your neck of the woods.

Sealing out moisture further, StretchVent gaiters tighten around your boot with elastic grippers to keep you dry from beneath, and you can cinch your pants up with a compatible The North Face jacket for jacket-to-pant integration that seals snow from making its way to your baselayers. A burly reinforced kickpatch boosts durability at the cuffs to keep sharp edges and rough boots from blowing holes or fraying edges. Speaking of boots, when you're bootpacking up ridgelines things can get sweaty, which is why the North Face backs up the Powder Guide pants with inner thigh vents and a ventilation system so you can dump heat as you're guiding yourself to the freshest of pow.

  • A burly shell for keeping out the elements while you hunt pow
  • Gore-Tex seals out wet snow and allows sweat to escape
  • Adjustable waist tabs keep your britches up without a belt
  • Reinforced kickpatch prevents fraying from ski edges
  • Secure zip cargo pockets are the perfect size for PB&Js
  • Inner thigh vents allow heat to escape while you hike or ski

Didn't Hold Up

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: medium
  • Height: 5'11"
  • Weight: 170lbs

The fit is great and the features are great: on paper this is a great pant. However, after just ten days of use the pant was in disrepair. There is a strange pleat on the front of the pant, and it did not take much to rip the stitching there. The fabric on the reinforced cuffs also ripped quickly under standard use. After less than two weeks of use the powder guide pants looked worse than my four year old Marmot Motion pant.

Outside of durability, the venting above the gaiter is a concept I just don't trust. It did work well to keep air moving through the pants, but a vent you can't close around your boots is not desirable on windy chairlift rides / any time you don't want to dump heat. While I didn't get the chance to ski these in powder, I believe the vent would allow snow easy access under the right conditions... just a weird design.

With all of that being said, TNF was excellent to deal with and gave me a full refund. The transaction was easy and fast, and that's not always the case with larger companies.

Killer all round gore-tex pant

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Medium
  • Height: 5'10"
  • Weight: 170lbs

These are a great burly gore-tex pant. I spend a lot of days in the back country and lift access. These hold up to it all. The pockets are all in the right spots. The vent inside the legs hold up way better than when positioned outside. The cuffs are bomber to handle sharp edges and the inner gaiter elestic is plenty tight. The onlyvthing I like to see is a touch slimmer fit from a fashion stand point.

Great Pants!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Med
  • Height: 5'9"
  • Weight: 180lbs

These are a great snow pant! They never get soaked, even in spring slush. They offer an integrated gaiter system (with compatible coat). You will want to layer underneath in colder temps. Fit snug and tight, no drag on the heels.

The North Face Powder Guide Pant

Tons of pocket space and bomber Gore Tex. I like them a lot. I wear a 33/30 in pants and the M/short fits me. I do wish the vents were larger though,

Wow. NF sizing guide is way off on these pants. I'm a 32 in Levi's and the Medium in these pants is easily 1,5+" larger. Despite the Velco cinch tabs helping, they are are still too big. (Suspenders would help but I'll just go to a small)

    Nice pants!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 5'4"
    • Weight: 135lbs

These are a hopped-up / Gore-TEX version of the freedom pant with a very similar fit. As expected, the Gore-TEX adds additional breathability and durability. The pants flare out a bit more at the boot than I expected, but not in an offensive way at all. The front pockets with the zipper could have been designed a little better (perhaps diagonally) but isn't a significant issue. These are a nice option, at a price point that works for the quality and design.
