    Sturdy and spacious.

The North Face Wawona 4 Tent offers plentiful room for camp outings where a larger structure is desired for comfort and convenience. Think longer stays at your favorite state park and weekend music festivals for the Wawona 4's preferred usage. It's large enough for a family of four, yet isn't too bulky for a couple seeking extra room while car camping. The 6-foot height let's all but the tallest of campers stand upright for easier changing and gear sorting.

Its robust single wall design and heavy-duty 12mm poles withstand heavy rainstorms without toppling over like flimsy tents. The large front vestibule has a roll-up shade for quick entry and optimal ventilation. When nasty weather rolls in, seal the front entrance to prevent rain and wind from blowing inside. Furthermore, there's a small rear door with a covered vestibule for added convenience and gear storage.

Awesome tent, storage sack—not so much

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this tent because I was tired of sleeping in a backpacking tent when car camping. The 6-person version got an excellent review at Outdoor Gear Lab, so I figured the 4-person would be the same quality and ease of set up.

Let me first say, the quality and design of the tent is fantastic. I am able to stand up in the tent and I'm 5'11". My cousin, who is 6'3" is able to stand in the center of the tent no problem. The first time I set the tent up was during a trip to Colorado, so of course it was storming with a torrential downpour and strong gusts of wind as that is what happens in Colorado. Despite this, I was able to get the tent up by myself fairly quickly without the inside getting wet (which if it was a double walled tent would have happened). lthough It being Colorado, the rain and wind stopped pretty much right after I was done getting it up—typical. It rained a couple times during the night and a few other times on my trip (no snow though). I can safely report that I stayed warm and dry. The venting and airflow of the tent is also pretty good, but it being a single-walled tent there was some condensation in the morning which is to be expected. This was really the only drawback of this tent in actual use. I would say that it is a for sure 3-season tent, but certainly not a 4 season tent (I'd be hesitant to camp with it if the forecast calls for week of stormy weather). Okay I do have one other negative thing to report in using this tent. I don't know if it was because the fabric was wet, but I had a hell of a time with the zippers on the vestibule—which is a huge problem if you need to open and close them in the middle of the night and you are only half awake.

The reason that I give this only 4 stars is because of a couple minor issues that don't have anything to do with using the tent. 1) the storage back SUCKS. It is a horrible design. While I can see why they used a cinch drawstring closure the execution is not that good. Part of the tent ends up being exposed because the fabric flap never really stays put (they should have used a "sidewinder" design like my EXPED matteress) 2) The tent stakes are just meh. I bought more sturdy and easier to place and remove stakes. 3) You have to buy the footprint separately and you definitely need a footprint. I don't know why companies that sell tents with a floor that isn't super sturdy don't include a footprint. I forgot to buy one at time of purchase, and it became a difficult task in finding one before I left (I tried to buy one direct from The North Face because they had a store near me and I was leaving so delivery was not an option, but they didn't have one in stock at the closest store—which seems crazy to me if you have the tent model the floor is for in stock). I ended up buying one from BC and shipping it forward to someone I knew in Colorado.

I got an excellent price on the tent when a discount was included and reward credit card was used. This tent is a value at the price I got it and would be even at full price. I can see this tent being useful for years to come. The North Face still makes some good stuff, and I'm glad I bought this particular model.
