Uncomfortable and stiff

These were a dissapointment. Uncomfortable and stiff. Gave me blisters after wearing for 2 hours. My advice is skip them for a more comfortable pair. Not worth the $$.

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. The Salewa Alpenrose 2 Mid GTX hiking boot is intriguing. These days, I’m either exclusively in ski boots or low cut trail runners when I’m in the High Sierra, but was excited to test these out. I was a bit concerned about the mid-rise and comfort - going from Altras to something a bit more narrow and mid-rise is a jump for me. Out of the box the fit was pretty much spot on and they did not feel narrow at all, but I’m still torn on the mid-rise aspect of them (once more broken in more they might not feel so odd to me). The latter point might not be an issue for those who regularly wear hiking boots. One feature I did like was the top lacing system - makes for super easy on/off of the boot (attached photo). It’s a little tricky to get them dialed in, laces seem a bit slippery, but it’s a feature I can get use to! I will admit, I’ve not been able to put the Alpenrose 2 through the wringer yet - it’s still ski season in the Sierra - but am looking forward to testing them out in the high country. They have been great for hiking up the local mountain at home and even worked well when I scrambled up a retaining wall to test them out (I did it in the name of testing!). The grippy outsoles will be great for traveling on granite in the Sierra - xc travel is my jam! I do love he grippy area on the heel as well - you never know when you might need to make a tricky move scrambling over a pass! I think the only issue I’ve noticed so far, and might only pertain to me (nerve damage in my lower legs and feet due to a back injury), is they feel a bit stiff. This will probably improve with more usage. Overall, the Salewa Alpenrose 2 Mid GTX is a well constructed and thought out hiking boot, and will definitely get a lot of usage in the in the Sierra.

Best lightweight boots I've ever had!

First thing I noticed right out of the box is how light weight these boots are! After using the boots for a few day hikes, I am so happy with the support they give my ankles and how well the toe box fits. One of my favorite features is that the grommets are bomber and so the laces stay tight. Since they are Gortex, I was worried about them not breathing well, but so far I feel like that won't be an issue. I am confident that these boots will be great for back packing as well as just day hikes.
