    Convenient

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 175lbs

I'm a student and I hate rain, so I always have this jacket with me. It's lightweight enough that it doesn't add any bulk in my pack or when i'm wearing it. It makes for a good wind breaker on windy days and is water repellant enough to stop a light shower, but I wouldn't trust it to hold back a deluge. This jacket is worth more than its weight.

    Essential Piece of Gear

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 195lbs

The Houdini has quickly become an essential piece of gear. It weighs almost nothing and packs down so small it can fit just about anywhere. It functions as good or better than my highest hope for blocking the wind, adding a small but necessary layer of protection (and even a little warmth; but not overly so, at all!), and being fairly universal in it's applications. I can wear this at night around town or at 11,000ft in the mountains and it always performs. I looked at and tried on several light weight wind jackets and this is absolutely the best that I found. Couldn't be happier. I'll carry with me during the full year, all 4 seasons.

    超實穿的軟殼外套

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'5"
    • Weight: 143lbs

    Disappears in your pack

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 140lbs

The appropriately named houdini surely is magic because it seem to disappear in your pack. Seriously, this thing packs down so small that I take it almost everywhere I go. It's great for hiking, mountain biking, climbing, or just rocking around town if it gets a little cold or breezy. Although it's not waterproof I quite often use this as my raincoat when it's hot out because it breathes so well and sheds light rain. This is definitely one of the most versatile piece of outdoor apparel I own and I'd highly recommend it to all!

Note: The fit on the jacket is more of a runner fit so it fits slightly smaller and slimmer than some of Patagonia's other jackets.

Weighing in at a blistering 3.6 oz. the Houdini is an essential lightweight piece for any outdoorsmen/outdoorswomen. The past few days in Park City have offered some variable spring weather conditions making this piece clutch to have in my fishing and biking packs.

Windproof, water-resistant and sleek - the Patagonia Houdini is definitely a must have. Whether you are biking, fishing, climbing or just enjoying the outdoors the Houdini is the piece you'll forget you have in your pack, but be so thankful you did when you need it.

I'm 5'10 180 and fit perfectly into the large. The Alpine Houdini runs larger, but this bad boy is true to size!

Hit me up if you have any questions on the Houdini or any other piece of Patagonia gear out there... the brand is rapidly taking over most of my closet/gear space these days.

    Perfect light jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'2"
    • Weight: 240lbs

I was looking for a super light jacket to be worn to cover my tattoos at work. I have so many short sleeve shirts that I wanted to be able to wear still yet still stay within my company's policy on tattoos. After reading a ton of reviews I narrowed it down to the Patagonia and the Outdoor Research. The deciding factor was that the Patagonia came in all black, unlike the OR. I've been very pleased and I wear it 3-4 days a week. It's extremely light weight and is as breathable as a nylon jacket can be in the southern heat and humidity.
As for fit, I'm 6'2" and 240 lbs. I typically have an issue with sleeves being too short, however I was surprised that this jacket fit great (XL)! It fits snug but not too tight if it's zipped up. I mainly wear it unzipped.
Only negative I would say would be the hood. I would like to be able to stow it in the collar. It tends to get caught by the breeze and blown around. However, it is thin enough that it could be folded inside the jacket, against my back.

    feather light!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 185lbs

This jacket is so small you can zip it into itself and store it in a pocket when not needed, I'm not sure how they managed to design such a lightweight yet protective jacket; hats off to Patagonia!

    Run's Small

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'
    • Weight: 205lbs

Packable jacket that I hoped would fit the bill for layering up while biking. It is a "Slim Fit" per the tag. I am 6', 205# and the XL is going back today. I"m not sure how it performs or if I am reordering now that I know the return policy here is you pay for the shipping. I'll shop local EMS and bike shop I think.

    Its Awesome

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 161lbs

Extremely lightweight, like others have said its not going to keep you dry in an all out downpour. Its does exactly what a lightweight does, offers you a reasonable amount of protection. Not very hard to get into the stuff pocket in my opinion but it is snug. Sizing is accurate in my opinion as well, for me as a runner I want the jacket to be form fitting and not flapping in the wind as I run. It was the perfect size for me.

    Always in my bag

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: L
    • Height: 6'4"
    • Weight: 200lbs

Other jackets have claimed to 'disappear into your bag' but this one actually does. Cutting wind can change your temperature in a big way, so I keep this in my backpack, on my climbing harness, and everywhere in between.

    Great Lightweight Jacket

    • Size Bought: L
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 150lbs

This jacket is great for just about everything! definitely not a jacket for a downpour, but can hold up great for a light rainfall, and great for wind protection.

    Teeny Tiny Awesomeness

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 150lbs

I bought this for my husband and he loves it. He takes it biking and it stuffs into the back pockets of his jersey. It is not a great rain jacket as i is water resistant but cannot handle a sustained deluge very long. He is 5'10" weighs 150lbs and it fits him perfectly.

    Go to Jacket!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I take this jacket with me everywhere! It packs down small so I can carry it in my pack for when I am running, biking, or camping. It offers a great amount of protection for how lightweight it is. I originally bought it for trail running (which it works awesome for) but have used it for everything from hiking peaks to sporting events. If you are looking for a rain jacket, then this probably isn’t your best bet but if you want a lightweight jacket for wind protection with a little bit of rain tossed in then this is the perfect jacket.

    Awesome lightweight jacket.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 200lbs

Exactly what I was hoping for. Well constructed, extremely light weight and performs beyond my expectations. This will go everywhere with me.

    Update - Still Love it.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 190lbs

Finally got a small tear in the jacket. Was "chimneying" up a rock climb and using my back as a form of friction. Easily fixed it with some Tenacious Tape and were back to no holes and back to totally water/wind resistance. The shape of it when packed into its own pocket really does make a difference when hanging it on a harness. It doesnt get in the way of everything else on the harness like protection and slings. That makes it quicker, and easier to grab that gear while climbing, noticed it a bit at first but, really was thankful for it in the Teton's this past weekend.

    Update - Still Love it.

    Yes, I love this jacket.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: L
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 165lbs

What a great jacket. LIGHT and breathable. I used this jacket on a late spring hike to the top of Mount Timpanogos. It was in the 50s on top with a 20 - 30 mph wind. This jacket did indeed block the wind. I plan on carrying this jacket on all my adventures.

    Lightweight and ultra-compressible

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 185lbs

As all the other reviews have already mentioned, this jacket is awesome! I almost always have this jacket on me and it has come in handy so many times. It packs down so small that I don't even think about not packing it in whatever bag my adventures require. It is a great wind layer and also does pretty well in light rain. Even after wearing this jacket on multiple occasions, I am always amazed by how light it is when I put it on.

I included a photo of the Houdini packed into it's chest pocket, iPhone 6s for scale.

How does this compare to last year's model?
I see that the pocket as changed on the front and it is lighter, but any other significant changes in fit (because the 2013-2015 were criticized for fitting tightly)or features from the previous model?

Torn on what size to order. I am 5'10" 170lbs with plans to end up around 180lbs in the near future. I am very slender and before time in the gym I was 150lbs so that's my natural weight. My chest size is around 39" and waist is 32". Having some lean muscle mass over a slender frame has me questioning a M or L. I wear a M in virtually everything (t-shirts) and they hang perfectly at the stomach with a little tightness in the arms and chest but not circus tight like I'm trying to show off. The most I will ever want to layer under this will be a 150 weight wool crew so very thin. Should I go M or L? Thanks in advance!

    Hey Jon,

You are right in between sizes on this. I would almost say go Large so you have a little better range of movement with this jacket. This jacket runs a little small. You could wear a medium but if you bump up 10-15lbs and add an inch or so to your chest it's going to be tight.

If you want to talk more about sizing or this jacket in general give me a call and we can get you all taken care of.

    Thanks,

How is the cut on this jacket for women? I realize there is a women's version of this but it was too tight in her hips and she loves the men's color. She normally wears a medium so I was thinking a mens small might be great. Thanks for any input.

Would this jacket be adequate as a skiing shell?

    urb105626694,

Maybe in spring time conditions or in areas with very, very little precip. Other than that I would not recommend it. You will need to layer a lot with it if you do choose to use it as a ski shell. In addition, this jacket lacks vents and a powder skirt.

Trying to decide between pat Houdini and montbell tachyon anorack for a late aug jmt thru hike and use on southern at as a lt weight wt rain jacket..will bring emergency poncho for use over if rains heavier....

    Best Answer

    Hey!

Both of these are extremely lightweight wind-shells with DWR coatings. I don't have experience with either of these specific items, but known Patagonia and Montbell, my guess is that they would perform similarly.

In deciding on which item to purchase, I see it as a decision between weight and convenience. The PTGN Houdini is probably more convenient as it has a full zipper and a chest pocket, while the MB Tachyon Anorak is a full 1.5 oz lighter.

Both should be great, but hopefully I laid out the main differences between the two.

    Hope this helps!

I bought a houdini jacket about 6 months ago and used it once. the zipper broke. Can i return it for a new one?

The short answer is yes. I'm assuming you bought it here, in which case you can use Backcountry's unlimited return policy, but if you bought it from Patagonia you can use their unlimited return policy instead. I'd say you're pretty well covered.

How good is the puncture Resistance on this jacket? I'll use it for mountain biking in a place full of spiky plants and trees and I'm worried that I'll rip it in the first ride. It happened with a Patagonia Nano Puff sweater I own.

The material feels more substantial on the Houdini even if it is 10 Denier in the latest version vs 15 Denier on the Nano. I haven't full on bushwacked in it, but I have rubbed against branches and bike parts without snagging. However if it were me, I would look elsewhere for spiky plant armor.

im 5'8" 172lbs lean, 34 waist, 40.4" chest. i was thinking a medium, ill probably occasionally wear a fleece or wool sweater underneath. or should i get a large?

    Frank,

I think medium should probably do it for you. Definitely the right size, not sure how it would accommodate a mid-layer underneath though. If you want to play it safe, and don't mind a slightly looser fit go large.
