Outdoor Research makes incredibly thoughtful, high quality gear — and this jacket exemplifies the company’s best qualities. It’s a lightweight, well-fit jacket that’s warm enough for three-season use in Minnesota. What made it my go-to has to be its versatility. The many pockets, the weight and fit, the hood — this jacket checks all the boxes. And it packs down very small, which is excellent for travel, camping and more. Getting it on sale is a treat, but really, I’d pay full price and not bat an eye. It’s well worth it.

I'm somewhat of a jacket connoisseur. I have a few name brand jackets that I wear and this jackets is one of my most favorite jackets. I hate being cold and so i need a jacket that I can wear all the time. You can wear it when the temps drop and when its around 50 degrees or so. I usually just have a tshirt underneath and im good. It is a little more puffy than most downs out there but I'm ok with that. I love inside pockets for putting your gloves down in. The hood is perfect and moves with your head movement. It keeps warms inside very well. I got this jacket on sale and I feel like i hit the jackpot. It does shed a few feathers but not bad and they're very small feathers at that. I have not worn this jacket in a mist or light rain yet so not sure how it holds up when wet. I'm 5'9" and 150lbs and went with the medium in case I want to wear a sweater under it and it fits just right.

I got this jacket for casual use around in the city and occasional hiking on not so treacherous terrains. This coat is great, I love the hood that allows me to skip the winter hot sometimes and retain my hair-do for the evening. I’m a bulky guy and got an XL. It’s a bit loose but it would be perfect if I needed a layer. I just wore a T-shirt under this jacket in 20 degrees weather and was quite comfortable. The only concern I have is with the feathers coming out, not too much but every time I wear it I see some feathers sticking out of the seams. I wore a fleece jacket as a layer one day and noticed a lot of feathers sticking to it! Maybe it’s just my piece, would love to hear some feedback.

Let me make one thing clear - I did not purchase this with any intention of using it in a technical sense. I'm a middle-aged dad from Buffalo NY that has no interest in being cold when running the kids to and fro, heading to the office on casual days or various errands. I've owned this coat for a month and it may be one of my favorite coats ever purchased. It's somehow as good at 40 degrees as it is at 15 degrees with a good cut of wind. I have also worn it in a light rain and had a solid pelting of heavy lake effect snow on it the last few days and it has held up well. I am so impressed with it and believe its worth every penny (and a no-brainer when on sale). Somewhat departing from other reviewers I do not find a significant amount of feather loss thus far. I've maybe found one or two on my car seat but that's about it. I also want to thank the gearhead, Alex, for helping my zero in on this jacket and a few others after I described what I was looking for - every gearhead I've encountered has been great, use them!

For the record, I only really wore this jacket around town mostly besides one round of 18 holes of disc golf! I'm not super savvy when it comes to down jackets and all of their tech specs but what stood out to me about this jacket was firstly how light it felt. the 650 goose down felt light and airy and was warm but not too warm for me. My body runs really warm naturally so I appreciated the airy feel. The Large fit me great. Some brands fit more slim and for me, with a broad athletic body type, I often have to get an XL just to fit my arms and shoulders comfortably. This large fit comfortably but I wouldn't suggest wearing anything too bulky underneath like a flannel or a baggier long sleeve t shirt. The jacket compressed really small which I am learning is a characteristic of natural down. Also, in my closet full of black and grey jackets, the green was refreshing to wear.

First of all the fit is perfect, OR has it down as usual. Took this to the Desert this fall, hot during the day and gets cold quick at night. I wore this jacket with nothing but a thin baselayer and was comfortable in the 30's. The puffiness is not too much and just enough to regulate your temp. Loved it!!!

This jacket is one of the best values out there! It's light weight, very warm and packs well when you need to layer down. It's a great jacket for those cold fall days at the crag/bouldering, hiking peaks or just cold nights around the campfire. The fit is nice and moves well even while maneuvering technical terrain. I recently used it summiting a peak in the Wasatch Range and as I gained the ridge the winds really started ripping and with the cold temperatures I had to throw this guy on. And I was very impressed just how well this jacket protected me against the winds without a shell! 10/10 would recommend!

This puffy jacket that folds into its own pock just accompanied me as I summited my first 14'er, in gale force winds at <30 degrees F. This, plus a windproof outer jacket and I was kept really warm, except for my face and fingers. It will be with me on every cold weather adventure from here on out.

Always with me on my adventures

I love this jacket. It is very versatile. I always have this jacket in my pack. It is useful for so many activities. This jacket keeps me warm camping, taking night pictures, at the top of a peak transitioning on a split boarding tour, and belaying at the crag on a chilly day. It only weighs 14.5 oz and it will pack down into its on own pocket for stashing in a pack. For how lightweight it is, it doesn't compromise warmth. The 650 fill down material blocks wind well and keeps me toasty in temperatures below 30 degrees easily. Layering is easy, I usually on need one or two layers underneath on even the coldest days. It is DWR treated making it water resistant. I bought a size large and it fits true to size. I am 6'0 175lbs. I have been using this product on almost every adventure for the past 6 months.

I had an older ghost whisperer model that I wanted to replace and so I checked around for a modestly priced down jacket. I came across the transcendent hoody and was intrigued by the design features. I’m not one to worry about weight on backpacking trips or casual wear, so this jacket perfect. Amazing quality, to be expected from OR, and warmth like no other. I’m extremely happy with this jacket and how warm it’s kept me. Been out in mid 20’s with just a baselayer underneath and I was toasty!

Ive had this jacket for a month now and here is what I've found. Pros: Warm. Very Comfortable Super Lightweight Flawless Zippers (small detail but worth noting) Con: it is pretty puffy due to the larger baffles. This isn't really a full con because it adds to the great warmth. BUT, for those looking for a solid stand alone jacket that can also double as a good mid layer on colder days you may want to look at the Illuminate from Outdoor Research or other lower profile down jackets. Also the nylon shell material is extremely lightweight, again to be expected in most down jackets , but I do wonder how it will hold up to regular use and abuse. Conclusion: This is a great everyday puffy that is supremely comfortable, toasty warm and pretty stylish as far as down jackets go IMO. It may not be the top of the line weather resistance but it holds up well to light moisture (beads up and sheds light rain pretty good ). If the weather turns you may want to use another jacket versus shelling over this one as it is pretty puffy, though Ive put a shell over it and it was fine, just not optimal. Overall it is a warm everyday jacket that you can use on the trail and look good in downtown with the technical details that outdoor folks will use and appreciate.

Just got it and worn a few times. I am a 42 short jacket and a large fits just right for me. I can do a couple of layers underneath. I would go to an XL if I you want to multiple layer under this coat. Nylon feels thin but not unacceptable for a stuffable coat. Great light coat for stuffable use. Stuffs into own pocket nicely. The black is not black. More of a gunmetal grey. It is made in China.

With its wider baffles, softer materials, and modern touches, the OR Transcendent down hoodie is a faithful update to the original. I primarily use this jacket as a casual layering piece and main Fall/Spring outerwear. The fit is absolutely perfect for a medium/athletic build (5’10”, 175 lbs.) with a little extra room in the arms and waist for layering. While I wouldn't expose this jacket to extreme elements without a hard shell, I believe it is perfect for everyday light use down to 20 or 30 degrees. My only gripe is that the color I purchased is not truly black, but more dark grey or charcoal.

Coat is very comfortable and light. A little poofy but that’s what you get with 650 down. I have noticed my car’s seat has some down that’s come out on the back so we will see if that’s going to be an issue down the road.

This is my go-to puffy for everything casual. I use it nearly every day besides the super cold days in Utah. I would say it keeps me warm to about 25 degrees with just a small sweater on underneath. It's proving to be very durable as I've used it for 4 years now. With it's 650 feathers I only use if or around town and basic hiking. I have other down jackets with 800 fill for times when weight and compression matters. Buy this if you are on a budget and are looking for a great quality jacket!

Gave this to a friend and this is what he had to say about it: I really like the packability of this coat! Being able to stuff it into its own pocket is great (and makes a nice pillow too). Its warm, comfortable, and lightweight which is also a plus. The only negative is the material is fairly thin and therfore prone to rips when walking through brambles, but I guess this is to be expected with a lightweight puffy. Overall, I'm very happy with this coat and would recommend for anyone looking for a lightweight coat. Great for climbing or when packability is a concern.

I like the jacket because it looks really nice. I got the orange color and it is just the perfect orange. The body fits nicely and lofty. However, maybe my arm is just small but the bicep area is very big. The fill in the arm is quite minimal. I wish it is a bit loftier in the arm.
