The identity of that sage was lost long ago in the swirling sands and blowing snow of time, but Outdoor Research has brought his words to life with the Men's Proverb Jacket, a fast-and-light alpine shell designed to get you up the mountain without weighing you down. It's a virtual certainty that you'll encounter radically different conditions during a long ascent, but the Proverb is versatile enough to handle almost all of them―it boasts a 20K waterproof and breathable Pertex Shield+ 3-layer membrane with reinforced shoulders and sides, and hem-to-pit TorsoFlo vents for limitless vent adjustment. You can even zip all the way up for an open-sided poncho-style fit for extreme ventilation in super-humid drizzle.

The pack- and harness-compatible hand pockets also function as vents when open, so breathing will never be a problem for the Proverb, even if it becomes difficult for you at 18,000 feet. Fully-taped seams and an internal front-zip storm flap will keep out moisture when things get really nasty, and articulated elbows and a trim fit won't bog you down when you run into an unexpected A3 pitch or technical ridgeline traverse.
