Helios Sun Hat

That small, exposed piece of scalp on the back of your head serves as a very painful reminder that you're going bald after a long day out in the sun—save yourself the burn and unwanted reality check with the Outdoor Research Helios Sun Hat. Made with Outdoor Research's SolarShield material, the Helios offers UPF 50 sun protection and is designed with a wide brim to effectively shield your face from the sun's rays. The elastic drawcord keeps the hat glued to your melon when you're floating down a windy river, and the adjustable chin strap serves as a fail safe, just in case you start to feel the Helios peel back from your head under pressure from heavy-handed winds.

  • A wide-brimmed hat for hiking, camping, and rafting trips
  • SolarShield fabric provides protection from UV rays
  • Adjustable elastic ensures a secure and comfortable fit
  • Chin strap can be cinched down so hat doesn't blow away
  • Floating foam stiffened brim keeps cap afloat on the river

Just what I needed

I've put it through the wringer

I just got back from three weeks in Peru—in the Andes and in the jungle. I needed a sturdy hat to protect my head from the sun that still looked good. This hat was just what I had been looking for. It kept its shape no matter how I stuffed it into my bag, and withstood all the elements I encountered. I definitely recommend it, and will be taking it on all my adventures from now on.

Great Hat - only 1 real issue

Love this hat. This is my daily go-to except for bad rain, when I use the Seattle Sombrero. Brim is wide enough to give decent face and neck sun protection, but light enough to wear all day long. The brim is semi-formable and doesn't flop much at all. The only real issue with the hat is sizing. You really need to try them on, aa even in same sizing, head circumference varies a lot and is not consistent. Also varies significantly based on color. Easy to do if you buy it in-person, but I wouldn't buy online unless you're okay with possibly going through a return/exchange process. Would gladly buy again and likely will if I ever lose this one.

Great fit. Maximum Comfort

I wore this hat for my first time on a nine hour hiking trip. It was comfortable from the minute I put on and the brim was big enough to shade my face and back of neck from the sun. Love the hat. Love the colors.

Inconsistent sizing and stitching

I love this hat, but hate that I have to select a bunch of different hats in the same size and try them on to see which one has been put together in the actual size I wear and which one has either been sewn together in the wrong size or mis-stitched. Because of the sizing issue, along with the fact that I live far from an Outdoor Research retailer, I have to give up on this hat. I need to be able to order a hat and receive it in the size it's labeled with.

Awesome Hat!

I purchased the orange hat and it's such a fun color. This hat does not make my head sweaty and it covers my face, neck, and shoulders from the sun. The drawstring is perfect and the underbrim is dark gray so it doesn't reflect the sun into your eyes. Perfect for my beach days, paddleboard outings, fishing trips, hikes, and boat days. I recommend this product!

Love the edited design

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] OR changed the way the chin strap is fastened to the hat. Thank you! Love it.

Tough enough for the Aussie outback

I am just buying a new Helios today, I have use this hat constantly in the Australian Outback as a Park Ranger for 6 years and it was of no surprise when it finally ripped today after more than a 1000 days on my head. I like that it is washable and stays on my head in high winds, you can squash it into a pack and it returns to shape. Working in the Outback for 30 years I've owned heaps of hats including the venerable Australian Akubra which is hot, sweaty and overrated for sure. maybe I'll buy two Helios...

I've already bought two.

It does everything I want in a sun hat. It is also very light and not heavy on the head. Unfortunately, it had a sewn in logo that seems so unnecessary and wasteful - it took me almost an hour to get rid of it. I'm sure you've done studies that show this branding pays off - but I avoid it, and wish stores would offer branded or unbranded versions. If it wasn't for the logo I would have given it five stars.

Just the right size

This hat is the perfect size for me. The brim is big enough to keep sun off my ears and neck but not so big that it gets in the way.
