Why We Like The Kayu 15 Sleeping Bag

The Kayu series consists of Nemo's ultralight bags for backpacking, and although it's ultralight, the Kayu 15 Sleeping Bag is packed to the gills with features. Its 800 fill-down insulation has one of the highest fill ratings to bring warmth without the weight, and Nemo treated it with Nikwax for hydrophobic properties that help the down retain its lofty warmth in moist environments. The shell and lining are also treated with durable water-resistance, and the hood and footbox have Osmo waterproofing for extra protection from wet weather and damp tents. The Kavu also features Nemo's clever Thermo Gills that drastically amplify ventilation for sufficient thermal regulation if you get too warm.

Missing compact stuff sack

The sleeping bag is advertised to come with a compact stuff sack which is shown in their photos and description. Instead I received the bag stuffed in this massive mesh bag and it almost looked used when I opened it. There was no smaller stuff sack inside either. Will return.

Great bag, annoying zipper

The bag is very lightweight and comfortable. The zipper has two annoying features. First, if you push it all the way down, the zipper comes off the track. So in the middle of the night, if you have to pee, you're probably going to accidentally pop the zipper off, then spend 5 minutes getting it back on. Secondly, it only goes down to about my knees (I'm 6 ft), so crawling out of it is kind of a pain. Otherwise, the bag is great.

Not 15 degrees!

I have been backcountry camping, mountaineering, and hiking for over 55 years in numerous countries and varied climates. My worn out 15 degree Marmot Hydrogen has served me well for the past 15 years and was replaced by a gift Kayu 15 degree bag. I have used it eight nights and have been cold in 30-40+ degree temperatures. I have had to sleep with a vest, thermal wear and to the extent my puffy jacket in a recent Cascades trip. The loft is shallow and the bag feels porous to incoming cold air through the baffles. I will try and return the bag to the retailer and purchase or exchange for a better product. I've heard good reviews about Nemo products but cannot recommend this bag.

Expensive and not warm

I have given this bag multiple chances for me to like it but in the end it’s not warm at all. I have been freezing in 40-50 degree weather and have had to sleep in a hat, base layer, and jacket when I was in Colorado and it got mid 30s. I’m not sure if I got a lemon that doesn’t have enough fill or what but I’d buy a different bag and save yourself some money.
