    Why/How to use Flotation Tails!

Nothing eliminates boundaries like MSR’s Snowshoe Flotation tails, unique to MSR snowshoes. These Tails add flotation on-demand in deep snow or when carrying heavier packs. With them, you can start with a smaller, more agile snowshoe for most adventures. When conditions change, attach the tails easily for greater surface area. Light enough to carry on extended trips, they allow one pair of snowshoes to get you through it all. Modular Flotation Tails are available for all MSR snowshoes.

    if your tall..get these

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

the added six inches of float helps me out as I am 6'2 , deep powder is no match anymore. very easy to install on my evo's. awesome accesory!

Used these for added crevasse protection

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Climbed on EVO Ascent snowshoes from 7200 feet to 11000 feet on Denali. I opted to attach these to the snowshoe to spread my weight over a larger area in hopes that I would be less likely to be gobbled up by a crevasse. On the way down we traveled mid-day, which is a no-no because of the higher temperature and weakened crevasse bridges. I did eventually punch through with one foot, so maybe my plan didn't work. It was tough to pull my foot out of the crevasse with the elongated snowshoe - my buddy actually had to give me slack in the rope so I could back down to remove the snowshoe and and pull it out by hand. Who knows, without these I might have gone in deeper.

Overall, I found these easy to use and the elongated snowshoe wasn't too difficult to walk in. I think they are worth the extra weight.

Work great with the Denali Evo snowshoes

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've found these to work great with the MSR Denali Evo snowshoe when you need a little extra surface area on the snow. They clip on and off easily enough and give you that added area to keep you atop the snow when you're carrying extra gear or whatever.

What happened to the tails that fit the...

What happened to the tails that fit the regular EVO snowshoes? I bought some 22" navy unisex MSR EVO snowshoes from Backcountry before XMas and now I can't find any tails that don't have "Denali" on them. Do these fit or not?

    Best Answer

They won't fit as the design changed. Try for the old version tails which comes in two lengths. The website was provided to me by MSR Customer Service as I ran into the same problem. I purchased both lengths seeing that it was discontinued AND my MSR snowshoes are in great condition still.

These DO fit "regular" Evo snowshoes. After doing a little bit of research I bought two pairs, in spite of the warning that they ONLY fit Denali EVO and EVO ascent, and put them on my (green) Evo shoes with no problem. The MSR web site ( states that these tails fit any Evo snowshoe. The MSR site lists Evo Ascent, Evo Tour and Evo snowshoes. (I couldn't find 'Denali Evo' shoes anywhere although MSR does, or did, make a Denali showshoe that is different from the Evo series.) What convinced me that these tails would probably work is that MSR still makes and sells the regular Evo shoes that I bought two years ago and these are the only Evo tails on the market. They aren't going to stop making tails for an active product.

BTW, although I put the tails on one pair of shoes and tried them out today, I can't comment on their effectiveness because the deep powder that spurred me to order the tails has degraded into heavy wet stuff (good for snowballs) due to warmer weather.

These are listed as Denali Evo tails ......

These are listed as Denali Evo tails ... Is that right? I have a pair of Denlai shoes and am looking for tails, but the Evo tails I have seen are narrower than my Denali ... I read on the tail (in the image) that it does say Denali and they indeed 'look' wide like mine (at the top) but I would hate to order the wrong item.

I don't believe the stock photo matches the description. The photo looks like it's the old style tails that fit the wider Denali shoes, and came in 4 and 8 inch. However the description looks like the new style tails. I think you should ask one of the gear experts on the site. Use the chat function, they should be able to clear it up for you.
