Stretch it, stretch it real good.

Baby, it's cold outside, and you want to hit the slopes. You want the warmth of down, but you don't want that constricted feeling that comes with your average puffy. Mountain Hardwear's Men's StretchDown Jacket was designed for these sort of situations. Snowboarding might be a gravity sport, but that doesn't mean you won't appreciate the mobility this stretchy jacket has to offer. Plus, the unique stretch-welded baffling responsible for such feats also traps more heat than standard stitching, so say buh-bye to that chill. Even if you slash some snow inside your shell, the Q.Shield Down technology ensures that you won't regret choosing down over synthetic.

    • Hydrophobic down puffy for mobile winter wear
    • Stretch welded baffles moves with you as you shred
    • Hydrophobic down retains warmth when wet
    • Dual-hem adjustment keeps out that chilly pow
    • High collar protects neck from windchill
    • Item #MHW00Z2

    Snug

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'6"
    • Weight: 165lbs

I'm normally a size medium in most things, and even though I was a little worried about the fit I decided to go with the medium anyway, and it was snug to say the least. I could barely fit my arms into the sleeves, and the chest was definitely tight (42" chest). It felt like I was going to rip it in half. Other than the fit it was a really nice jacket, though. So if you're in between on which size to get, definitely go up.

    Great down jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I ordered the Stretchdown after trying a Patagonia Down Sweater and finding the sleeves too long and the trunk a bit too boxy. I had to order two versions of the Stretchdown before I got the right fit, thanks to some great help from Gearhead Wesley Eads. I first tried the previous season’s version that was cheaper but a little heavier and did not have the contrast panel on the chest. The size medium in previous season’s version was too baggy in the arms and the trunk. Mountain Hardware switched from a Regular to a Alpine fit for the new version and it fits my slender frame really well. The armpit might be too high if you’ve got more bulk in your arms and chest but I have a lean climber’s frame with slightly longer arms and it fits perfectly. The jacket is very warm - I wanted something a bit heavier and warm for less active pursuits like walking the dogs and moderate hiking in Jan-Feb in the mid-Atlantic, when it gets down into the teens and 20s (as opposed to a lighter, thinner down jacket that’s mostly good for 30 and above). So far, I’ve been thrilled with it; the material is sort of matte... less slick/shiny than higher-end ripstop and the stretch in the fabric means zero shedding of down and a very comfortable fit. I grew up in the south and don’t like the cold all that much, but I’ve worn it over top of a t shirt and light fleece and been totally comfortable during a cold spell when the temp dropped to 10-15 degrees with a windchill that made it feel like 5-10. I’ve taken it on a few hikes and find it to be comfortable under a daypack and the material holds its own against branches and the occasional brush against rocks. I don’t have any concerns about it tearing. All-around, a great job by Mountain Hardware. Highly recommend. - especially if you can get it on sale for under $200!

Runs big, not warm, low on features.

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 160lbs

I heard this was a form-fitting jacket, but it didn't work for me. Sleeve holes were very big, dumping heat through the wrists whenever I moved my arms. Hands in pockets get chilly, no neck guard. Disappointed.

    Perfect Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: L
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 190lbs

I was so impressed when I first put this jacket on last year. Still to this day, I always stretch my arms out as far as possible just to test the stretch in the jacket. I am still impressed every time I put it on. I take this jacket any time I will be sitting still for a little bit longer, or it is too cold for just the Ghost Whisperer. I wear this jacket as a main jacket around town as well and it still keeps me plenty warm.
