I ordered these poles for trail running. For some background, I was bred a cross country skier and raced competitively before changing to trail running. I have a pretty stringent list of requirements for my poles (Or did when I skied). They had to be very stiff, I can tell the difference between the Swix Triac 2.0 and Swix Triac 2.5 in stiffness (2 of the foremost Nordic poles. They have to have a cork grip that I can use with out gloves and not get blisters, as well as a pretty good swing weight. Of course you are not going to get your list checked when you are searching for Trifold running poles because... duhh. However, with that said I was disappointed in the stiffness of the poles given that Leki is a renowned Nordic ski pole manufacturer. The pole is a smaller diameter (14, 12, 12, 12 rather than 16, 14, 14, 14 in mm) considering that, the lightness, and micro capability it is rather stiff. I was also somewhat concerned with the deployment system. It has the CLD rather than a spring loaded button. As a result you need to use the lock and pole the pole out until it clicks, so it is slower than the collapsible vario poles with the spring loaded button. However, because the variability and deployment systems are intertwined rather than completely separate, the poles collapse to be smaller (The smaller diameter helps to). I found that it was fairly quick once you practiced, and actually more efficient if you were using the full 130 most often! If you wanted to use the 115 length more I would fine some thin tape and mark the length so it is faster to deploy. In conclusion, I think they are killer poles, with the grips certainly being the highlight. They are super nice cork and are not too bulky for collapsibility. The poles collapse well. They should be used more for hiking then running, but if you don't require something super stiff, then you could use it for both. As for me, I will be going to the Micro Vario Trail poles for the increased stiffness and lightness. I have not decided whether I want to return these or not.
