The classic equipment of cycling's history has largely been laid by the wayside. While we do appreciate the benefits of deep rims and carbon monocoque framesets, we have a certain romantic nostalgia for boxy rims, round steel tubes, and artistic lugs. Despite all of the advances in cycling technology, wool has at least remained a constant, with Hincapie Sportswear's Power Merino Glove proving that there is still room in today's cycling world for artifacts from the sport's past.
That's not to say that these gloves use only pre-war technology, though — the basic Merino wool body is accented with silicone grip on the palms and the forefingers, middle fingers, and thumbs have thermally conductive inserts so you can play with your decidedly modern touch screen devices without taking the gloves off. Still, the fact that Merino wool is so naturally well-suited to insulate, wick, and stay warm even when wet means that it functions just as well in 2014 as it did in 1914 with no high-tech embellishments necessary. Merino's secret is that it has very small fibers that create a lot of negative space for trapping air. This creates a more robust microclimate around your skin, keeping you warmer, longer.
The Hincapie Sportswear Power Merino Gloves are available in four sizes ranging from Small to X-Large, and in the color Black/graphite.
