Helly Hansen designed the Arctic Transition Parka for researchers in the harshest and most remote locations the world has to offer. Heavy duty hard shell
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Size Bought:
- Large
- Height:
- 6' 2"

This is a waterproof hardshell layer. It is not insulated. You are supposed to put your own insulating layer underneath depending on weather conditions. I intend to use it in cool rain in the fall, and freezing rain & snow in the winter. It fits my hooded down jacket underneath. This is made of heavy duty material with serious reinforcements. If you hate thin/lightweight waterproofs in cooler weather like I do, then you will appreciate the robustness of this parka. The shell fabric is thicker than any I've seen from the other outdoor clothing companies. It's as thick as my Carhartt rain bibs. I love this thing. Sizing: I'm a slim 6'2" and I got the large. It is perfect for layering a medium thickness down jacket + thick baselayer underneath while not looking too boxy. The sleeves are a good length. If you're going to the South Pole with it, you might want to size up. The only thing I would change is to use snaps or buttons on the front storm flap instead of velcro.
