perfect carry-on travel to africa

I purchased this to be my carry-on during a 2 week trip to africa. No check bags, only this and a personal item. This pack was ideal. The hip belt is effective and supports the weight of the bag on the hips, perfectly comfortable waiting in line for customs 1+hrs, walking through airports, and various local travel throughout the continent of Africa. Exactly what I was looking for.

Best travel pack around, and I've tried a bunch

Comfortable, adjustable torso length, ventilated suspension, cavernous opening, durable, good organization without a bunch of unnecessary trinkets. Typical Gregory all-around awesomeness. No external water bottle pocket is the only negative, but it's not a big deal.

Awesome for all users!

I got this bag for Christmas and I love using it. All of the pockets and features that it offers are so helpful and it can store so much for a 40 liter bag! Definitely would recommend to anyone in search of a hiking/backpacking bag.

Decent features, odd design.

I bought this a year and a half ago and I'm not sure it was a good choice. I own three Gregory backpacks and am generally a fan of their designs, but I think they could have done better on this one. The pros are that it is a comfortable backpack and the main compartment is decently spacious for a carry on pack. The cons are that there are a limited number of pockets, and the layout of the pockets is not the best design. For example, there are no pockets on the waist belt, which is odd because it's a relatively large waist belt for the overall size of the bag. Also, the pockets inside the bag don't provide much organization (e.g. for chargers, small items, etc.) and there are no side pockets, for a water bottle, etc. Perhaps the strangest design is that the laptop pocket is located towards the front of the pack, rather than closer to the wearer. So the load distribution is unwieldy if you have a laptop in the bag. It's worse if you have a laptop and the main compartment is not loaded, or loaded with light objects. Normally, what you might be able to do is collapse the main compartment with the straps to bring the load closer to the body, but because of the rigid side walls on this pack, you can't do that. This is another strange design: the side walls that can't collapse so the bag maintains its volume whether or not it's loaded. The laptop pouch should have been put closer to the wearer and the odor proof pocket could be put further away from the body. There should be more interior pockets. There should either be pockets on the waist belt or the waist belt should be smaller.

Great features but needs a few more

I bought this pack to travel around Europe by train and foot next year. There are some nice features, such as the padded tablet pouch and dedicated pouch for wet gear. I agree with the others about the rain cover, just trying to put in on empty was a chore and I doubt it would fit on a full pack. I plan to do some long walks with it, at times in the rain, this cover isn't suited to that; instead the rain cover completely zips closed around the pack and there are no backpack straps. I'll probably have to bring a third party rain cover instead. Also, I wish the hip belt had pockets to store my camera, etc. in for quick access and a water bottle holder would be nice.

OK

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Packing non-check valuable items - as, binoculars, camera, etc. Not really traveled with it yet, but in looking it over and from past experience, appears well suited for my intended use.
