    Simplicity rules.

If rolling hills, small country lakes, and wide open spaces are what get you out the door when it's time to ride far more than splits, course records, and training plans, the Ember MIPS was made for you. Based on the design of Giro's pricier Synthe helmet, the Ember caters to those who demand functionality from their gear, without strict constraints on weight or budget.

MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers the a thin basket added to the helmet's interior that moves slightly upon impact to absorb some of the brain-damaging rotational energy generated in certain crashes. Together, MIPS and the Ember's In-Mold polycarbonate shell back up your brain in the event of a crash, without weighing you down during the majority of the time when you're safely upright. One-handed fit adjustment and a ponytail-compatible design ensure you're able to secure the fit you want without wasting valuable ride time, and a strategic arrangement of 26 vents keep air moving continuously throughout the helmet to prevent overheating. Plus, the Ember's aesthetics purposely match Giro's 2017 apparel collection, so if you're into coordinating, you're in the right place.

    • Ride safely without overthinking in this sleek helmet
    • MIPS technology absorbs rotational energy in certain crashes
    • Wealth of vents keep you cool and dry on warm, sunny rides
    • Air-Fx padding adds cushion and comfort for long rides
    • One-handed fit adjustment lets you dial in the right feel

    Great ventilation and fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

This is my second Giro road helmet and I am just as happy with it as I was with the first helmet that I wore for 3 seasons. It breathes very well and is so comfortable- makes it easy to forget I am wearing a helmet. I got the "Titanium Rio" and have gotten many compliments on it. I will agree with Re that your hair will get snagged by the MIPS so it is a good idea to invest in a cycling cap. The pros of MIPS protection outweigh any hair snagging that may occur. I wore a medium in my last Giro and am a medium in this one as well. Smith helmets I am a small, but the small Giro wouldn't even go on my head.

    The MIPS snag

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

Giro has always made great helmets. I am a medium in this one, which is what I expected from past Giro helmets.

    Ember Pros:
    Good ventilation
    Simple to adjust straps
Super simple to adjust the overall fit with the dial in the back - I LOVE this dial over other types of helmet adjusters, it's easy, works well, and it's comfortable.

    Ember Cons:
My hair gets stuck in the MIPS liner, even if I am just placing the helmet on my head for a second or two. There is no way around it and it rips my hair out. So, I've solved this issue by always riding with a cycling cap, which has the added benefit of a visor when the sun is in my eyes, so it turned into a win/win in the end. Not to mention it's easier to toss a sweaty cycling cap into the washing machine vs the helmet.

For the super hot summer days I like the Castelli Summer Cycling Cap (https://www.competitivecyclist.com/castelli-summer-cycling-cap-womens) and for average hot days, I like the POC Resistance Pro XC (https://www.competitivecyclist.com/poc-resistance-pro-xc-cap)

    Good looks, good features.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I picked up this helmet to replace a Giro Atmos II and as a cheaper option than the Giro Synthe. There's no good reason to call this a women's helmet, the only difference from the men's Cinder is color options. The color choices are great though, as are the venting and retention system. This helmet fits my head decently but not as nicely as the Atmos - it feels like it sits a bit higher and the shell shape looks bulkier. I've still been riding it a year and can't complain. It fits like a Giro - I have small to medium head and went with a Medium.

    Comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

My wife has trouble finding helmets that fit comfortably, but this one seems to be a winner. The helmet fits well even with a ponytail and stays cool in the summer. Love the look of the matte white/turquoise.
