Why We Like The Shaman Climbing Shoe

La Dura Dura, Jumbo Love, Witness the Fitness—the world's hardest climbs are just a scooch more attainable when we're wearing the Evolv Shaman Climbing Shoe. Updates to this aggressive sport climbing shoe include more toe rubber for toe-hooking, an inset front strap for stupendous toe scumming, and new stylish colors.

Everything else about this unlined shoe is basically the same as last season, like the Knuckle Box to accommodate a tighter fit, and the Love Bump midsole for more comfort in a downturned position. We also love how the Shaman features Evolv's Trax rubber for high friction and the Variable Thickness Rand for a longer performance.

Not very versatile shoes

I bought these when I was starting back on climbing after a two year hiatus and my feet do not want to fit into my old shoes any more. I found this on a review website claiming they are best for people with wide foot. I wear size 8 sneakers (my dress shoes size is 6.5EE and my sneakers and hiking shoes sizes are 7.5W/EE for the best fit) and I tried 7.5 to 8.5 and finally settled on size 8.5. I ended up with a pair that is just right out of the box and minimal pain. These shoes are alright. They are designed with steep climbing and bouldering in mind and they struggle a bit on technical vertical climbing with small foot holds. The TRAX rubber is very soft and I find it hard to trust them on small foot holds. Partly because it is hard to feel the small hold with the 4.2 mm TRAX rubber, partly it is my fault for sizing them for comfort. I ended up using these for warm up nowadays. My other shoes are primarily La Sportiva, and they (Miura VS, Katana Lace, Testarossa and Skwama) are all in size 39. The 8.5 Shaman is slightly longer than the 39 Skwama, while narrower, but with higher volume in the forefoot.

I just got myself a second pair

Its takes a little while to break in, but the rubber is sticky, at least for the first 3-4 months. Not great for smearing, other than that it ticks all the marks with small feet, heel hooks, toe hooks. Can go a couple of re-soles. The straps and the other parts are well made and hold up for 3 days of climbing a week on average. I do try to take them off between climbs in the gym/outside to air them out. Can get smelly if you don't because the toe box is narrow.
