Bestest ever !
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
This is by far the best spike protector I ever had. This spike protector is awesome. It has probably saved me thousands of dollars in spiked technical gear. I just can't say enough about just how awesome this spike protector is compared to every other spike protector I ever had the pleasure of knowing.

Eh, the Patzl spike protector is better
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
The plastic is terrific but, as others have noted, the tie-off to secure this on the axe is awkward. It has fallen off several times in various situations. The similar BD pick and adze protector is my top choice on that end, but for the spike I prefer the simplicity of the Petzl protector.

PSA: Cover your spikes
- Familiarity:

Sharp spikes are kind of a necessity. Down jackets, gore shells and other nice pieces of gear are also pretty key. Make sure your gear gets along.... cover your spike.

Works as listed
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Stays on, easy to remove. The price of protectors is easily worth the cost of repairing or replacing gear...

Kinda weird that you have to tie a prussik type hitch with the shock cord to make it stay on. Seems like something without the cord that locks on the hole in most spikes would be a lot better. It does have two bumps that grab that hole, so it doesn't just fall straight off without a prussik. Rubber bit seems great. Price is wonderful.

Get it with your axe
You will want one of these to protect your axe and your gear. There really isn't much more to say about it.

Always use protection...
- Familiarity:

As many have said these are great for protecting against accidental tears in your gear or scrapes on your legs or arms from your axe when you forget its on your pack. I also like these a lot for when I am flying with my gear as protection when I toss these inside a gear bag.

No more impaling gear!
Cheap, and its a great insurance policy for the rest of your technical gear. Mine fits perfectly on my Raven Pro! Just use a prussik on either the shaft or leash, and you're good!

Spike protector
It's pretty straightforward. I have a Black Diamond Raven axe and this is a great lil protector. Keeps myself and my gear safe while keeping it sharp and in prime working condition. A definite must.

Awesome
Fits great, not only protects but I don't have to worry about it going through it any of my bags or into my gear.

Floor Protector
Use this on my Raven Pro which sits out on my hard wood floors. Also keeps my gear safe from the spike in transit.

Worth it to save your gear
For me the value of this isn't so much that it protects your ice axe spike as it protects the rest of your gear from the spike. No longer do I poke holes in my duffels or clothes while travelling with my axe, no longer to I stick my skis or myself or my helmet while carrying it on the outside of my pack. It fits my BD ice axes perfectly. It works fine on non-BD axes, just not quite as well. The attached cord works well to keep in on with a double or triple prusik (Google "prusik" if you don't know how to tie one, it's well worth learning if you're climbing).

Protection is a must.
Yeah these are for geeks, but I find they are great for travel and for running your axes in the pack. Nothing worse than ripping a hole in your pack or bag and 5 bucks will save you the trouble. These will work on other axes other than BD as well. Worth it to me.

Does the job!
Does what it is suppose to do...little tricky to figure out how it is suppose to stay on but once you get it, works like a charm!

Anyone know how this thing is supposed to stay on the axe, other than just hoping it doesn't pop off?

You tie a prusik on the shaft with the elastic cord and it stays put pretty nicely.
