Good hikers that lack precision on the wall

These are comfortable shoes and seem to be built well but I’m disappointed in their climbing ability. I’d like to see more precision and better rubber. For low fifth class terrain and below they do just fine.

WE are all different

I usually buy every shoe, size 10, including my other 2 black diamond approach shoes, for this one it was different I ordered first half size up and they were to big so I ended returning them and then got size ten , in which they were still to big so drastically i ordered size 9 and then its was to small so finally I ordered 9 and a half and it fits perfect... I already have hiked with them and ran my mountain bike they feel fine! Very sturdy and kept by far my feet dry.

Tight fit, waterproof-ish

Runs a little small, the waterproof is more like water resistant. I have used these in high rain weather and my feet have been wet a number of times. Good insulation, do keep the feet warm.

Black Magic

Size 11. 15 oz per shoe Fit true to size and my feet are burgeoning on wide. The length is slightly shorter than other brands 11’s but have not been an issue. These shoes are so comfortable I wear them casually often. They have a great balance of rigidity and just enough cushioning. I’m able to carry heavy loads and still have strong balance and comfortable feet. The BD Dry lining breathes great. My feet don’t get hot even on hot sunny days. I recommend treating them with Nikwax or similar. They did completely wet out on me on a long hike in rain that became sleet and heavy snow as I ascended. The trail was about an inch deep of slush and running water for a couple hours. They persevered til I was on my way out and then wet out. I think if I had treated them first they would have made it. The conditions were as challenging as it gets for a membrane. The traction is excellent on every surface and descent in snow. The heel break will allow for a gaiter strap underneath the shoe. Overall these are fantastic! My second pair of BD shoes. I’ll be buying more as their shoes are one of their best products and I own a lot of this brands gear.

Love the look, but fit needs careful consideration.

Love (love!) the look and style of these approach shoes. Wanted to love and keep them, but despite sizing up a full size (typical for many approach shoes) and trying to add an aftermarket insole which filled up the already full shoe interior, my heel would not stay locked in when moving around.

Get a full size larger

Definitely get a full size larger. I usually wear a Chuck Taylor 12. After sending back two pairs I'm hoping the 13.5 will work. Fingers crossed!

Black Diamond shoes must be designed by elves

I wanted to love these shoes, and even after reading reviews that they were smaller than normal but would stretch over time, alas, they didn’t stretch enough (and I have already thrown out the packaging and worn them outside). I normally wear an 8.5-9 shoe. I ordered a 9 shoe. And when I wear them, my foot width is compressed so badly that the middle of my sole is in pain after I take the shoes off. I do not recommend these shoes unless you are an elf. And in that case, they will fit perfectly.

Stiff and Uncomfortable

Was looking for a good all around approach shoe. Hiking technical trails, rock scrambling, easy route clinbing, route setting, etc. Thought these would be good for the northeast fall-winter. Learher, gortex. But they just don't feel comfortable and there is almost no heel cushioning. The front feels bulbous and bigger than the back of the shoe. Clunky. Couldn't see wearing them and feeling agile and confident on technical trail and rock scrambling. Definitely wouldn't want to wear them for long and couldn't see wearing them around town. I gave 3 stars because they seem well made and good looking enough. The other major bummer is there is no free returns. So, customers have to pay if the shoe isn't a good fit. Waste of money. I'll stick with Backcountry and the other sites in the future that give the customer some break.
