Excellent poles

These are my 3rd pair of z poles. I started with the aluminum version, years ago, due to an Achilles heal injury. My latest are the carbon z poles which replaced my last carbon z poles which lasted 10 years. Z poles are sturdy, lightweight and get the job done, which is primarily to relieve pressure off my Achilles heal during the uphill phase of my hikes. Thank you Black Diamond

Can’t Buy Tips

Cannot purchase replacement or any decent tips for distance carbon z poles. Have wasted money on tips that won’t fit. Sad.

My go to

I've used this model of poles for years for alpine approaches and they are my GO TO. Light, sturdy, and easily packable.

Poor Design

Have had multiple BD poles over the years but this new design has durability issues. On first use in average terrain the plastic tip broke off, which exposes the tension system. Once its exposed it only a matter of time before the cord wears-out and breaks. Why they thought that a plastic tip on the business end of the pole would be good enough blows my mind as the older models were not like that

Didn't work out for me

I gave 2 stars instead of 1 because in operation they worked well, as any trekking pole has for me. Unfortunately mine corroded together every time I used them unless I cleaned and coated the joints with some kind of a lubricant. I found that wax based motorcycle chain lube worked well, so I cleaned and applied it after every use. Then I went to use them this year and the top part on both were completely seized and I could not "open" the poles. I tried soaking them in penetrating oil for a month and applying gentle heat to no avail. I ended up breaking one trying to get it unstuck. Less than a year old and completely useless, an expensive mistake.

Light, sturdy, and compact

This is my second pair (I left the first on the roof of my truck at the trailhead, they did not wear out). Pros: Stability - I’m 200 lbs with climbing gear, and I can place and lean into these confidently in steep terrain. The sections fit tightly together with no rattling or slack. Compact - I particularly love how trim a package these make when stowed. The pole sections snap into notches on the baskets and they make an easily stowed unit when not needed. Light - These weigh less than any other trekking pole that I’ve owned. I have looked at other ultralight poles in the past, but have always found them to be concerningly flimsy. Cons: The straps are a tough to adjust on the fly, which only really matters to me when I have to change in and out of gloves. They aren’t appropriate for skiing, but that isn’t what they are designed for, and I believe BD makes a model with a metal bottom section and adjustable length for that purpose. These are indispensable kit for my mountain adventures here in Montana, thanks BD!

Great trekking poles

I use these for trail running they’re great! Easily foldable and storable! I sinch them nicely into my hydration vest and keep one at each side. Very light and durable been hitting roots, rocks, trees with little worry of breaking! Definitely recommend for a first set of carbon fiber poles! Do it, Do it!

More flexible

Love how lightweight and compact these poles are. Having said that, they are far flimsier than other pairs of black diamond poles that I have including carbon extendable versions. After hiking 100 km one of the poles has a significant bow to it.
