Distance 8L Backpack

Black Diamond's Distance 8 Backpack is hybrid pack that combines an alpine-worthy daypack with shoulder straps similar to running vests. There are pockets sized for HydraPak's 500ml SoftFlasks as well as two smaller pockets for nutrition and another pocket sized for Black Diamond's lightest wind shell, the Deploy Wind Shell Jacket. The shoulder straps utilize Black Daimdon's stitch-less Edge Taping Technology to eliminate chafing and promote ventilation. The BD Dry back panel also ventilates, as well as wicks moisture and dries quickly to promote fast-moving activities high up in the mountains. Black Diamond made the main compartment out of Dynex—the same material used for Black Diamond's Ultralight Camalots—for superior durability that doesn't weigh you down. The main compartment is durably water-resistant to protect your gear all year long.

Excellent and efficient design!

Pack is the perfect size for longer runs and fast hikes. Pockets on the shoulder straps are well laid out and easily accessible. My favorite feature are the sleeves that hold my distance trekking poles. Highly recommended!

Light and fast

I picked up the Distance 8 for long days where I'm moving light and fast in the mountains. Love the fact that this pack is set up to carry ice tools, trekking poles and a water bladder. Excited to keep logging miles in it to see how it holds up.

Solid pack

Feels nice on, but has a few flaws. The latch on the top of the bag should be facing the other way, the tightening strap hits you in the back while running when you have it fully tightened with a small load. The compression straps on the sides dangle around when you tighten them down. You can’t get poles back in without taking it off but it carries them nicely. Overall feels good to run in.

Great Pack - Bottle Holders Way Too Small

Overall this is a great pack with plenty of space for an extended adventure day. The roll-top closure is great and does a good job of keeping precipitation out of the pack. Everything feels secure and the fit is comfortable. My only complaint for the pack is that the bottle holders in the front are frustratingly small. It is difficult to fit bottles in at home in the kitchen, much less on the trail. I have found that leaving the bottles in the holders and refilling them on the pack is easier, but this is not always practical. If BD would go with a zipper pouch bottle holder similar to the Distance 20, this pack would be perfect.

Black diamond distance 8

I've used it several times
Size Bought:

For warner weather hikes and runs you can't beat this pack. It will hold comfortably light rain and insulation layers along with a couple of easily accessible 500 ml soft water bottles and snacks to keep you hydrated and fed while on the move. It also has the best trekking pole carry system and will handle an ice ax for higher mountain adventures.

Wonderful backpack

Very satisfied, looking forward to the next store event. This bag needs to buy a water bag below 2L separately, which can hold a box of self-heating rice, a pack of tissue paper, a down vest, and some protein bars

Extremely Versatile

Holds plenty of gear, great compatibility with my Distance Z poles. The harness design holds full loads as if it was a pack half its size. I’m excited to use on some day long ridge linkups in the Wasatch this upcoming season. For my winter hikes and runs I can have a 1.5 liter reservoir inside along with an energy drink, a sandwich, my Alpine Start Hoody, micro spikes, extra socks, light gloves, and my Recon Access Mitts. When it gets hot outside I can even stash my shirt under the main compartment flap. You will not regret buying this pack.

Lightweight, rugged, functional trail running pack

Since picking up the BD Distance 8, I've put it through the ringer. Several ultra adventures in a variety of terrains and conditions and this pack refuses to quit. The size is great for the essentials + some wiggle room for some extra items. This piece of gear is great for the beginner or expert trail runner. The only minor quarrel I have is access to stowing my poles; they lock in good an tight with the durable, cinching cord setup but often I have to take the pack on and off to stow. I can usually pull them out just fine. Overall, highly recommend for your longer trail adventures

Fantastic Running Pack

I have had the distance 8 for well over a year now, two winters, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it. To date it has primarily been used for running 20+ mile runs throughout the winter. It can carry a fair amount, down jacket, waterproof, all the snacks and a decent amount of water whilst still remaining totally comfortable. it's so comfortable in fact that I don't really notice it which is impressive at that weight. The build quality is excellent, and the design is brilliantly thought out. I would put it on the more rugged side of lightweight but that is good for me as I want a reliable pack that will last. My only niggle is the string that tightens the top of the pack can bounce around if if you don't stow it carefully. I really hope Black Diamond continue to make this pack as I will not hesitate to buy another when this wears out.

Perfect size

I bought this for biking and I often forget it's on. It fits a water bladder nicely, plus a packing cube with repair and emergency supplies and still has room for shedding layers and extra gloves. I'm amazed at how much I can fit in here and yet it still fits perfectly no matter how much I've packed it. I bought the blue colour (Dark Patina) because I've grown sick of black and blue is easier to spot in the wild. The pockets are well placed for my GPS, a quick snack, and even my glove liners. I'm 5'10", 170lbs and bought a medium. I am veyr happy with this purchase
