Why We Built The Cottonwoods GORE-TEX Jacket

We seek out the storm in confidence in our Cottonwoods Jacket. Inspired by the 500+ inches a year of snow we typically see in our Cottonwoods Canyons—Salt Lake City’s backyard—this hardshell is made from highly durable 3-layer GORE-TEX material that can handle our biggest lines, all while keeping us warm and dry. This robust outer layer isn’t as lightweight or stretchy as our Rustler Jacket, but the protection it offers for plowing through Pacific Northwest snow or making the most of pow days is unparalleled. The segmented sleeve design delivers the freedom we need for pole-planting and tightening up our bindings. And we built in a bevy of thoughtful features inspired by our Gearheads to keep us dry and charging all winter long.

I LOVE the granite green color, it's beautiful. I also like that there's room in the shoulders for layering and movement. Unfortunately the material is really stiff, and the fit around the collar and hood is super odd--if I zip up the collar to the top (which I usually prefer to do), and put up the gigantic hood, the top of the collar is literally up to my forehead, and the hood hovers a good five inches above the top of my head. (It's clearly designed to fit a helmet, but still, it's insanely big.)

Wanted to love this jacket so badly! But, like other reviewers note, the hips are insanely tight. Definitely would not be comfortable to wear this all day on the mountain.

I read everyone's reviews, and was worried about the hip size.. but thought I'd give it a try. I'm typically a medium, but ordered a large so there would be extra room in the hips. Even still, way too tight. I wanted this jacket for skiing, but it would leave me with no room for layering or my ski pants with a belt. The shoulders are very large compared to the hips, so ordering one more size up would look really baggy in the shoulders. Sad because I loved everything else about the jacket.

I ordered the Granite Green and loved the color but the jacket was too tight in the hips. I know I have big hips but most mediums fit me fine. If the jacket is labeled as a woman's jacket, I wish it would fit a womanly shape. Would not reccomend if you are curvy.

I was given this product by Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. I used the Backcountry Cottonwoods Jacket on all my snow adventures this winter. I live in Park City so I have access to the largest ski resort in Utah in my very own backyard, which means I snowboard nearly every single day. I have worn this jacket in a variety of conditions from sunny spring skiing weather to windy/blizzard conditions, and freezing temps. The Goretex feature in the Cottonwoods Jacket not only never failed to keep me dry in all conditions, but held up against the roughest of riding. The jacket is extremely tough and did not show any sign of wear or tear after taking spills or ripping against tree branches all winter. I am 5’10 and 150lbs and decided to order the large jacket. The fit worked for me but I think I could still use a tad improvement. I wanted to size up in order to fit layers underneath and have more length in the arms. The arms felt a little bit too long though and the width of the jacket seemed a bit on the boxier side. The jacket is burly and because of that is stiff when you first start wearing it, but it did break in a bit as the winter went on. I loved the ample amount of pockets including the large double front chest pockets. The internal mesh pocket was perfect for shoving a base layer if I got too hot while riding. The interior comfort cuffs with thumb holes fit over my wrist guards and never failed to keep out snow- so necessary!! I rarely used the powder skirt but it has a zipper so you can easily remove it. My favorite part of the jacket is the large hood. There were countless windy/blizzardy days where I would put up the hood over my helmet on the lift and it would keep me warm and dry. Overall a great shell with lots of features, extremely durable, and it looks really sleek on the mountain.

I was given this product by Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. This winter I did a lot of skiing and also tried backcountry skiing for the first time. I skied in a variety of conditions ranging from powder, cold windy days, and warm spring days. This jacket was perfect for all conditions! I love the underarm zips for warmer days, there are pockets in all the right places (especially an inside pocket for keeping my phone secure and away from the cold) and the thumb holes ensure that the jacket sleeves don’t ride up. The jacket is very durable and VERY waterproof. I spent so many hours sitting in powder and no snow/water got through the jacket. The zippers are a little stiff at the start but overtime loosen up and although the material of the jacket is thicker, I still had full mobility while skiing downhill and hiking uphill. I am 5’3”, 120 lbs, bust is 34, waist is 27, hips is 37, and wear a size Small. The sleeves are a little long on me but the thumb holes help the sleeves stay in place. The hood/neck of the jacket is pretty large on me because I think the jacket is meant for slightly taller people (the neck portion of the jacket goes up to my nose which is taller/larger than I’d like), but it’s still okay considering everything else about the jacket is perfect. And I love the color! It’s granite green.

This product was given to me by Backcountry but this is my honest opinion. I love this jacket! Fits like a glove with some room to spare for layering. Sleeves are perfect length and love the thumb holes on the wrist material. So many pockets also plenty of stashes for some snacks and skins. The material is stiff but I can appreciate the rugged material. Keeps me dry and warm in all New England conditions. Backcountry tours big and small and blue bird resort days as well as snow storms, love this jacket.

Love the jacket. Did a great job keeping the wind and moisture out when I was skiing and was easy to move in. The only thing that is weird about this jacket is the hood, it’s huge! I guess it’s made to go over your helmet but who does that?

Sweet material but a very odd fit. The neck piece curves into my neck and chokes me.. almost like its meant for very long necks. The body is very fitted so I would recommend sizing up a couple sizes if you want to layer. The arms are also way too long and I have pretty average arm length. The tips of my fingers are where the jacket wrist would be. Zipper also broke after day TWO of skiing. Would not recommend this jacket unless you try it on first.

I really loved this jacket but arms too long. I’m 5.3, 115lbs ordered small. Able to layer heavy puffa jacket under for warmth (Midwest winters). I think the xs would fit top but not my hips (36).

Better half loved the color and functionality of this bomb-proof jacket - but it's got an achilles heel! The zipper failed on Day 1 of our ski trip and had to replace with another shell on the mountain which cost a pretty penny. The zipper failed and got stuck at the bottom position. I read a prior review indicating a zipper issue - but all the other reviews + the fact that BC uses YKK zippers which are typically best of the bunch - decided to give it a go anyway given all the other 4/5 star reviews. Hopefully we just got a lemon here. Not what I expected from BC gear but appreciate BC standing behind their product and issuing a full refund. Hoping for better luck next time w/BC branded gear...

The same thing happened to my jacket! I've skied in it maybe 5 times before the zipper broke. I can unzip it down to the bottom but it will not come all the way off so I have to get it on and off over my head.

The zipper malfunctioned for me today as well on its second time out on the slopes.... BC is replacing it for me. They seem to have really great customer service! :)

Out of the package I was excited about the jacket but when I put it on it was clear from the beginning this wasn't going to work. It fit like a large in the torso and a small in the hips. Sadly, this is a common problem for me with ski gear. Really? Do manufacturers think only barbies ski? Very disappointing.

this is always my experience with ski jackets too. If you find something that fits well, report back!

There are a lot of bad reviews on the fit of this jacket, so I was hesitant to try it, but the fit actually turned out great for me. I purchased it lightly used off of a resale site because it didn't fit the original purchaser (she described herself as 5'6" 140 lbs and pear shaped). I'm 5'4" 120 lbs and I have kind of an hourglass figure (smaller waist, but evenly proportioned upper and lower body). I typically wear an XS in tops, but this jacket in S is perfect for layering (it works for me over a baselayer, fleece jacket, light puffy, and my ski bibs) . An XS would have been way too small. The chest and hips both fit well and mobility is great. For me, the arms aren't outrageously long. The top of the cuffs (the gore-tex part) reaches the middle of my fingers. With mittens/gloves on, the sleeves do get a little bit bunched up, but I probably wouldn't have even noticed had I not read all the reviews. The stretchy cuffs with thumb loops are pretty loose, which I was skeptical about at first, but I now really like because they don't get bound up and feeling constrictive in my mittens. Note that this is not an insulated jacket--it's a shell, which is exactly what I wanted for layering while backcountry skiing. Be aware that it's not terribly lightweight or stretchy compared to some. For me this was a perk, as I was looking for burly fabric since I'm often out in nasty weather and pushing through brush, etc.

Wore this jacket stuffed with: -beanie -neck gaiter -phone -hand sanitizer -chapstick -headphones -eye drops -Honey Stingers caffeinated energy gummies 😉 After stuffing all of that in the huge pockets I only had one issue and that was when bending over snacks would fall out of the inner pocket that you might put your skins in. That being said I could definitely stash my snacks in other places and put something like my beanie in that pocket. Many reviews state to size up and I almost think I would have been better off with a smaller size, but with a puffy it works fine.

This jacket his huge on top in the M size and still manages to tightly grab around the hip area which limits mobility in skiing and also just looks bad. Try again please.

Strange fit

I really really wanted to love this jacket! Great color, lots of pockets in the right places, and I caught it on sale for a great price. I think it would have performed well, but the fit just didn't work for me. I sized up after reading the other reviews about the hip area running small. It ended up being way too big everywhere else, kind of boxy, with really long arms - and I'm 5'10"! But I don't think I could have sized down in the hip area. Very nice looking jacket though if you have narrow hips and stick with your regular size!

Have you ever fallen in love with a color? I find myself purchasing more and more items in a shade similar to the Granite Green color and I guess you could say I'm happy with it. I like to think of it as a modern seafoam. In addition to loving the color, I really, REALLY love the function of this jacket. The 3L aspect keeps me nice and dry in the stormiest of weather, which makes me a happy shredder. And the abundance of pockets makes storing snacks, keys, kleenex and my phone a breeze. No two pockets have to have different items together inside them, which makes me have a bit more security that I won't dump anything accidentally when I get on the lift. The only weird thing for me is the wrist gaitors since the sleeves are a tad too long, they don't seem to fit my oddly short arms properly.
