Minimalist pack, maximum safety.

Research shows that wearing an airbag while you ski or ride doubles your odds of survival if you get caught in an avalanche. So why doesn't everyone wear one? Well, the problem is they've been too heavy, bulky, and expensive—until now. The Backcountry Access Float 8 Airbag offers a low-profile, lightweight way to stay safe when you go through the gates to get into the backcountry.

Perfect for lift-access backcountry and quick tours, this minimalist bag has enough space for basic avalanche safety tools, as well as a small hydration pack and a few snacks. The Float airbag system is light, affordable, and easy to use, and most importantly, it could save your life. It uses a compressed air cylinder to almost instantly inflate a 150-liter airbag that helps keep you at or near the surface of a slide in order to minimize evacuation time. Backcountry Access also has the world's most extensive network of cylinder refill and exchange centers, making it easier for you to get a new compressed air cylinder after you have to deploy your airbag.

Great for short trips

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Bought this for cat skiing and I was really impressed with how comfortable it is and how easy the bag is to repack after being triggered (I did a test firing before heading into the backcountry). The pack is really small though and once you have the air tank, shovel and probe packed, there's really not much room for anything else. I could barely fit spare jacket in its stuff sack. Great for cat skiing or really short trips into avalanche territory but if you need to take anything more than a sandwich I would size up to the 22.

Best Competition Bag Around

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

No doubt this is the BEST airbag that I have ever competed with. It is small, light and comfortable allowing you to focus on your competition run and not worry about your bag throwing your weight around. This bag is ideal for side country, heliskiing, short skin trips, and especially competing. The first thing I noticed about this bag was how well it fit to my body. I am a small person and this bag is so adjustable it even fits my small frame. It is also very light and moves with you as you ski. Your shovel, probe and canister all fit perfectly into the bag leaving just enough space for the essentials; an extra layer, water, snakes, ect… There is not a ski caring system on the bag therefore no extra straps swinging around. However, if you need to attach your skis to your bag grab two ski straps and you can attached your skis diagonally onto the bag through the black holes on the top and bottom the bag. This system allows you to decide the orientation of the skis to whatever is best for your hike.

Nice Light Airbag

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I had the opportunity to use this bag a lot last winter, it is now my go to for slack country, snowmobile, cat and heli access skiing. I think everybody can relate to wanting the smallest, lightest pack possible for the situation and this pack is excellent in that regard. For most ski touring missions I would recommend the 22, this pack has built in space for your shovel and probe but doesn't leave a lot of room for tons of extra items. Skins alone take up a lot of the cargo space so for longer missions where lots of liquids, food, and clothing are required consider the 22. For everything else, I highly recommend this bag.
