A jacket that backs up its name.

There's a breaking point when the weather gets cold enough that thermal jerseys alone don't provide enough warmth. The Assos iJ.Habu.5 Men's Jacket is designed to take you beyond that barrier. It wears with the weight and feel of a jersey and is ideally used over one of Assos' three different Interactive Base Layers to vary the total effect of its warmth. The critical design detail that gives the iJ.Habu.5 Jacket the potential to keep you warm into seriously chilly weather is the Stratagon windproof material that Assos places across the front, down the arms, and over the shoulders.

The rest of the jacket is made with Roubaix Q fabric. It's a lighter weight version of their typical Roubaix material, so it provides insulating warmth without causing you to overheat in temperatures in the '40s. Assos is known for its tendency to engineer everything, and the Assos difference manifests in Roubaix Q as a waffle pattern crisscrossing its inner face. This reduces the weight of the fabric and increases its compressibility without affecting the insulating qualities. As a result, the iJ.Habu.5 can still be crammed into a jersey pocket should the frigid morning develop into a bright winter afternoon.

Though the jacket is cut with a more form-fitting silhouette than most cold-weather kit, Assos' impeccable tailoring and the stretch of the materials means it won't hamper bar reach or layering. And while we appreciate not having to fight the jacket in order to reach for a bottle, the ability to add a light, medium, or even heavy wool base layer beneath the jacket is even more valuable. This layerability lets you convert the jacket into a full-on winter-weight item when conditions require by adding additional warmth beneath its protective shell. Whatever your layering choices, the iJ.haBu.5's mesh lining facilitates moisture movement away from your microclimate so you stay as dry as possible. In high-wear areas—like over the spine and inside the windproof collar—Assos laminates aditional lightweight mesh to protect the base materials and your skin from abrasion.

On the back, you'll find three standard pockets and two zippered pockets for secure storage, a feature you'll appreciate if you've ever stashed your phone in a jacket pocket only to take it off when you got too warm and been unlucky enough to hear your phone slide out of its berth as you pulled your arms free. It also has reflective elements along each zipper on the back and up the front of the jacket, and the front zipper itself terminates at the top and bottom in contrast-color zipper garages to prevent fabric snags and throat irritation.

    • A winter cycling jacket for temperatures into the low-40s
    • Windproof paneling throughout provides moderate protection
    • Lightweight thermal insulation maintains comfort in cold weather
    • Expansive storage includes zippered security pockets
    • Reflective details help maintain visibility on dreary winter days
    • Assos' obsessive attention to details surfaces here in cold-weather style

    My new favorite ASSOS piece

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: TIR
    • Height: 6'3"
    • Weight: 240lbs

Living in New England I use this jacket close to 6 month out of the year.
All I have to do is tune my undershirt for the specific weather conditions.
Fit is true to size and is a typical ASSOS fit (no surprise there). Even thought I would say it is has a little more room than typical. I really like the detail on this jacket, especially the outer arm packet. A great place for energy gel and such.

    Fantastic piece.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Size Bought: XLG
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 190lbs

In two rides this has become my favorite above 45 degree top. First was a ride that started at 50 degrees and ended at 59. With a light Craft base layer I didn't over heat. Second ride started at 43 degrees paired only with a winter Assos base. Was cold on a two mile decent but that was it. Only strike against this jacket is high cross winds will penetrate this jacket. Be advised if your output isn't moderate to high than this jacket is not for you, but if it is this jacket is magic. I'm an older rider so I don't like the skin tight fit. XLG is a perfect fit for me.

    Favorite piece of gear

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 164lbs

I am 5-8 and 164 and the large fits me snugly with enough room for a baselayer underneath. I was surprised at the range that this jacket offers. I have ridden in mid-30s with the winter baselayer and in the mid-50s with a lighter baselayer. I have never been cold and I have never been hot. It is very comfortable and is my go-to piece of gear.

    great stuff

i wear size S Jersey from Assos (and all other brands), and got a size M for this jacket and fits perfectly as I really use it as a jacket but NOT a long sleeve jersey. I carry my phone, wallet, food, small-tool-bag in my jersey, and this jacket goes on top. This jacket cuts slim, but not as slim as the Castelli Gabba Jersey (2nd version) or Rapha Pro Team Soft Shell Jacket (2015 version).
Thickness is on the lighter side, but does block wind decently. I live and use this in Southern California.

      I'm 5'11

      BEAUTIFUL BUT NOT FOR EVERYONE...

      • Fit: True to size

I wear mostly Assos apparel and I own a pair of HaBu5 jackets which I have a fair amount of miles on. The previous review by MWS is spot on from my experience with the i.J.Habu5 jacket. You may want to consider a few more details about the HaBu5, considering it's a fairly expensive item...

The fit is typical Assos, "very" snug, body hugging and comfortable on the bike but not comfortable off the bike. The HaBu is designed and cut for a trim, fit athletic body type. It's definitely NOT a good choice if you have a less than trim, fit body and you will probably feel very uncomfortable wearing this jacket. This is not a casual, roomy, club fit jacket! Also, some cyclists may not like the rear pockets on this jacket because they are a bit unique...The side pockets are only zippered and they do not have traditional style slip-in open pockets. The center pocket is open but it's not very large. You can fit a lightweight pack-able wind/rain jacket (150g) in the center pocket, but it's tight. The sleeve openings are also designed to be close fitting to your wrist, as a result, they can be a struggle to fit your hands through when putting on or removing the jacket, especially if you have large hands.

Overall, I think the HaBu5 is a beautiful stylish looking piece with exceptional Assos quality. It's designed for temps in the 40's to low 60's. With a winter LS baselayer, I'm comfortable down to around 37 degrees with moderate winds. The front exposure is essentially windproof, the back fabric breaths very well and it's relatively light weight for a mid-winter jacket.

      FYI; 5'8.5", 160lbs, 32" waist, 41" chest. Wear size L in HaBu.

Great jacket (jersey?) for mild winters

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I find the best way to think about this jacket is as heavy long-sleeve jersey. As other users have pointed out, it fits like a jersey and doesn't leave a lot of room for excess layering. For San Francisco bay area "winters", I find that this is all the jacket I need. With this jacket and a good base layer, you're good to the low 40s. To that end, I'd say that Assos is fairly spot on with their climate range of Early Winter 5 on this piece (http://www.assos.com/en/44/als.aspx).

Fit wise, I'm 6'1", 160lbs and fit of the medium is spot on. I wouldn't want it to be any larger, and in typical Assos fashion, it feels little odd until you're actually riding your bike; when you're hanging around the coffee shop it's going to pull a bit across your chest.

The only strike against it (and it's a stretch) is that zipping this jacket up tends to be a two-handed operation. The flap behind the zipper that prevents drafts has a tendency to get caught when attempting a one-handed zip up. This makes the jacket a 4-assos stars garment, which would be 5 stars for any other brand.

Nicely made but watch the sizing

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Assos makes the best garments for cycling in my opinion. I wish I had started with them instead of wasting money on lesser brands and constantly trading up but that is life. This garment in particular is sized tight, skin tight, wetsuit tight, sausage tight... get my meaning? I'm a large across the board but this jacket left no room to breathe or wear a jersey underneath so unless you want a fit more akin to a full body skinsuit go up a size. I decided to return it since going up a size would have made it too long and its too much money to spend to not have it fit perfectly.

One of the best pieces I own

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Purchased the Habu two years ago and it's been my go-to piece for cooler weather ever since. It's versatile for temps in the 30s and 40s, and workable with another warm layer under 30F. Super form fitting piece, and definitely true to Assos sizing- order carefully. I am 5'11" 165lbs with even proportions wearing a medium, and it's very snug- uncomfortably so if I'm not in the riding position as otherwise it (by design) pulls across the chest. There's never any flapping in the wind- ever. The price is hefty for what's essentially a windproof front long sleeve jersey with a breathable back, but it's an amazingly designed long sleeved fall and mellow winter piece you can cram into your back jersey pocket.
