Timp 1.5 Trail Running Shoe

Created with Altra's foot-forward design, this dedicated trail shoe has been updated with a softer and more flexible midsole, as well as a new multi-directional mesh upper. The Timp 1.5 features DuraTread outsole rubber and TrailClaw lug pattern, which work together to help you dig into soft trails and give you sticky grip on boulders, roots, and scree. The result is a smoother ride all around, with greater traction and a flexible yet secure fit that adapts to your foot's movements as you run.

  • Trail runners for knocking out miles with support
  • Soft and flexible midsole ensures a smooth ride on the trail
  • Lugged outsole grips and sticks on steep and technical terrain
  • Multi-directional mesh upper flexes with your foot while you run
  • Four-point gaiter compatibility keeps out dirt and small rocks
  • Zero Drop platform promotes a healthy and natural stride
  • Wide toe box lets your toes splay out naturally

Everyone’s foot is unique. Give this shoe a reasonable try before judging. Your feet need an adjustment period. If you have a fat foot, this shoe will not fit. I am a very outdoor active/fit 63 year old (backpacking, canoeing, cycling, paddle boarding, hiking, trail running, exploring) and had foot surgery earlier this year to repair multiple injuries due to use. My orthopedic surgeon recommended Altra’s at the 3 month healing visit. I could hardly walk and my foot was really swollen. I could only fit in Crocks. It took a while for the swelling to subside, but I was able to start wearing Altras I now own 10 pairs of Altra’s including Escalantes, Torins, Lone Peaks and Timps. I use the Timps for hiking and cycling (I can’t use my biking shoes because of the hard carbon soles). I am selling all of my Vivo Barefoots and Lake Cycling shoes. I have a new favorite - Altras rock!

Embrace the space? Not in this model. The timp 2.0 was shrunk compared to the timp 1.5. The shape is also quite different. more linear in the 2.0, & less foot shaped in the 2.0. Very disappointed. The timp 1.5 was a shoe that fit me perfectly. I tried the 2.0 hoping the rumors of shrinkage were not true. Unfortunately they are. I had the same issue an other reviewer has reported about the stitching squeezing down hard over the top of the very beginning of the big toe (widest part of my foot). I was in pain and it left a mark after 10 min walking around the house. No way I can run in this. Altra: please revive the timp 1.5! The attached pics show a side by side comparison of the 2.0 (first shoe) and 1.5(second shoe). there's about 1/4" ish difference in the width!? The biggest differences are in the toe box - right where I need the width the most. Yes, these indeed are the same size- size 10. By the way, the Torin 4.5 fits me better than the timp 2.0. unfortunately the torin feels super cushy- like running on big pillows. I suppose I'll get used that after a run or 2 more....

This is a beautifully crafted piece of footwear that is designed for a uniquely shaped foot. Some people like to complain about the subtle changes from the previous version, but Altra clearly states that this is now a “performance” fit, so obviously some tweaks were made. If you have a wide forefoot and narrow heel, you will absolutely love this shoe, as it will fit you better than anything else ever has. If you don’t like it, move on. Otherwise, do not badmouth a company that is trying to produce a complete line of shoes to fit everybody, instead of one shoe to fit everybody. I have purchased 6 pairs so far, and plan on buying more to stash away. That way, if Altra changes it again, I won’t be on review boards complaining about the company and using words like “Epic” that were cool for three minutes in 2014.

It's pretty obvious what happened to this shoe, which could have been great and instead is terrible. They designed the whole shoe, and it was a masterwork. Then someone got the bright idea of making the insole much thicker but forgot to adjust the volume of the upper to compensate. The result: constriction across the first knuckle of the big toe, and numb toes for miles. If you have some other, thinner insoles around, perhaps from a previous pair of Altras, you can swap them out and be fine. Otherwise prepare for pain. Just like the Torin Plush, you might be able to stretch the forefoot and pack out the insole enough to escape the pain if you can endure a hundred miles in this shoe before then, but otherwise either plan to swap the insole or wait for the next version when Altra will undoubtedly fix this glaring bungle.

Soft and Light

Altra hit the ball out of the park in my opinion with the Timp 2. A great easy day trail shoe that can pick up the pace when you need it to, would be a great option for anything from a marathon to 50 mile trail race. The fit for me is the best I have ever felt in an Altra trail shoe with excellent midfoot lock down and enough room through the toe box but not the sometimes sloppy feeling I have experienced in other models like the lone peak 4. The Quantic midsole foam feels very cushioned as well as responsive when you need it to without feeling to squishy or soft, just in that sweet spot. The lug pattern on the Timp 2 maintains plenty of traction through mud, snow, and ice while really feeling best on hardpacked trails and road to trail situations. The Timp 2 feels like the Torin 4 with a trail ready sole and more breathable upper, so if you are a fan of the Torin you will love the Timp 2. In the 100 or so miles I have put in the Timp 2 so far I havent noticed much as far as wear and would expect this shoe to last at least 350 miles. Because its lighter and more cushioned than the lone peak, I would recommend this to anyone looking at Altra trail shoes as its really the standout model in their line up right now!
