Why We Like The Thule Covert Camera 24L Backpack

Versatility. We like how the Thule Covert Camera 24L Backpack gives us versatile options for our photography, traveling, and hiking. The pack features versatile carrying options with its backpack straps, removable shoulder strap, and removable hip belt, which allow us to throw our gear on our back, over our shoulder, or across our chest. The padded camera pod fits snugly into the pack for protection or can be carried on its own by its handle or worn as a sling pack with the removable shoulder strap. We can also access our camera, clothes, and gear three ways—with top panel access, back panel access, and side access to the camera pod—and organize our belongings many ways in the adjustable interior, which features approximately ten bazillion pockets. Thule designed the Covert pack to keep our camera safe, and it also features a padded tablet sleeve and padded laptop sleeve which fits up to 16-inch Mac products or 14-inch PCs. That's a ton of options packed into a 24-liter day pack.

Perfect For Packing Camera Gear (and more)!

After weeks of research trying to find a backpack I could use for photography, work and EDC I am very happy I found the Thule Covert bag. I saved this review until I and a chance to do some local and international travelling, so I could try it in different use scenarios. Wearing it for a photography trip (I'm an amateur photographer, not professional) it was easy to pack my mirrorless camera, two lenses and gear, a tripod, water bottle, rain jacket, lunch and much more into the bag. When I hit the short trails I popped out the camera bag and left the rest of the pack in the car. For an international trip the Covert was great for the plane. My camera and lense were nicely protected, and I had quick access to my cords, water bottle and tablet. You can get a surprising amount into that padded camera insert. Even with my camera, spare lens and other gear I was able to get in some snacks, and even crammed in some small unbreakable souvenirs when out and about. The pack seems pretty sturdy, but only time will tell. Definitely good for inclement weather, as I was in rainy, windy elements in Canada and California in October and November. It's comfortable to wear for long periods. I lugged it across San Francisco completely full and it treated my back and shoulders well. Could use a bit more aeration, but that's a minor quibble. All in all, it's an excellent backpack for use in a number of scenarios.

Skeptical at first, but it has grown on me!

I do quite a bit of travel (from touring with bands to flying internationally), need a backpack for daily use items (camera, lens, laptop, personal items, etc.), and it needs to be durable enough for changing weather conditions and the occasional motorcycle ride. I also like a backpack I can fit underneath the seat on an airplane. It's a pretty tall order, so for a decade I used the same Think Tank Perception 15 backpack. It was great and comfortable, but tended to be just a little too small at 15L capacity and was always top heavy (where the camera was stored) and had little padding in the laptop compartment. After my trip to Japan earlier this year, I was finally ready to retire it. I spent weeks searching for a good replacement and finally landed on this one. It took some adapting to get used to and I was not completely happy at first. On paper the design seems perfect, but in practice it can be finicky. Getting the camera cube set up just right is a bit trickier than expected. Then utilizing the storage with the camera in place took a bit of adjusting. I chalk this up to me just being so used to my old backpack though. I did manage to get everything setup in a VERY usable form. I've since traveled a bit with this backpack and with the increase in size it still fits under the seat on an airplane. My nice Macbook sleeve won't fit, but the laptop storage seems adequate enough to not require it like I did with my old backpack. The straps do not have much padding, but with the hip straps that should alleviate tension on the shoulders - although my bag is on and off so often I haven't used those hip straps yet and probably won't until I'm back someplace requiring a lot of walking which leads to my next point. The hip straps conveniently store in a pocket on the back, however your lower back will feel this depending on where you wear your backpack. I find myself wearing the back a bit higher than normal so the strap bulge lines up with the arch of my back. The back panel opens to easily access to everything, but the zippers seem to always be touching my back unless I carefully have the strings sit along the zipper. I am quickly adapting to the nuances though. I find I do like this backpack quite a bit after all said and done though. I'm not sure if it explicitly states this, but the backpack does seem to be water resistant as well as being durable overall so far - looking forward to testing it out with my bike. No backpack will be completely perfect, but I am pleased with everything so far and look forward to, hopefully, having this backpack for the next decade.

Ive had this bag for well over a year now, LOVE IT

As said in the title i've had this bag for over a year. I just spent 2 months in Europe hiking all over with it and its just an amazing bag. I love that I can remove the inner bag and keep my camera protected and just use that if im leaving the car quickly. The bag provides plenty of room for my laptop and all other traveling needs. It fits easily over my luggage handle making it the best for airport travelling. I wasnt sure about the top at first but it allows the bag to open up nice and wide! I've used this bag travelling, for photography, hiking, being an EMT, there's nothing this bag isnt great for. Its been durable so far, no wear or tear is showing yet. I've also used the laptop pocket for a water reserve and didnt have any problems. The versatility is what sold me, most camera bags dont allow for room for snacks and water and a dog bowl well this does!! The upper pocket is also the perfect size for my dji mini 2 drone bag as well.

Awesome bag

I don't usually leave reviews but this bag has one bad review and one good one so I figure I would chime in. Love this bag. I will be traveling around the world in a month with it, so I have been getting my tech bag in order (this bag). I have also taken it out with me a few times now and am very pleased. It fits a ton of stuff, all while being personal item sized. The top compartment perfectly fits my DJI Mini 3 Pro case (From the fly more package), and the bottom fits all my loose stuff along with 2 cameras. Its comfortable as well, even wearing it on my front side. I like how most of the pouches can be accessed from multiple locations. This makes stuffing it full not a pain to access the things that are at the bottom. I do wish it had a hip strap. I also with that the zippers were lockable (being a camera bag). The last thing is it has slots for a laptop along with a tablet. I don't know if it was just me trying to stuff too much in here, but I had issues with the bag closing if both of these slots were in use and the removable camera bag is installed. Overall I was hesitant to buy this at the price point, but you get what you pay for. I would definitely recommend this for somebody looking for a solid gear bag that they want to last for a while.

I love it! But have a few frustrations

I love all that this bag offers and it is so very comfortable in n my back! Also the perfect size of bag as well! But the two things I am finding frustrating is 1.) it says it will hold at 16 in MacBook. Mine does not fit. I have to take out the waist straps to even make it remotely fit. But even then it will not zip up all the way one corner of my MacBook sticks out. Which is very scary for me because it does not fully protect it. 2.) it says it will fit a 16 MacBook as well as my iPad. Which is the whole reason I bought it. But when my MacBook is in the slot my iPad does not fit. Is is one or the other…. I even have the older skinny MacBook I couldn’t imagine the newer thicker ones there is no way it would fit. I don’t have my camera yet so I can not speak to that part of the bag. I love what all the bag has to offer. If I had it to do over again I probably would not have bought it because it just does not fit what it says it will.

Awesome Bag - And Not JUST for Photographers!

My wife and I were browsing for a replacement backpack for my everyday carry needs. I am somewhat of an aficionado when it comes to bags and I had a few great options. When my wife pointed this one out, I initially dismissed it because I'm not a photographer but the sales associate encouraged me to check it out as an everyday pack. I am SO glad they did! This bag has gone on multiple trips - from roadtrips across the country to flights to Hawai'i - and it's performed wonderfully. I may have an extremely specific use case but I absolutely LOVE the widemouth, top-loading design that allows me to quickly throw items into it (or access them when getting some work done on the road) and the modular nature of the pack means I can customize my carry to suit my needs! I'm even using the included camera bag as a day sling since it fits my 40 oz Hydroflask! Kind of odd but it definitely works and not just for photographers!
