I bought this jacket for my husband. He loves the look of the jacket. He hasn't worn it yet because winter is pretty much over now so he'll see next winter if it does the job.
My favorite!!

I have a bunch of North Face jackets, however, the Gotham is my favorite!,(I have 8 of them in different colors, camo etc.) I read all the reviews and say you can please some of the people some of the time. I really have no issues with the jacket, it is warm and wind proof, and suits me and the wx here in Va.I bought my 2 brothers one and my grandson one and haven't heard any complaints yet!!You have to have different jacket weights to suit the wx as it changes and I doubt anyone owns one jkt for all occasions. Look at some of the reviews on more expensive brands and see if they are all 5 stars.in conclusion, I am a big North Face fan and love my Gothams!

I live in the bay area in California & I bought this jacket for winter use. I start work at 3am where the temperature has actually been down to the low 30's. I use to just wear a NF TKA 100 fleece long sleeve, then a NF Khumbu fleece jacket, then a NF outer shell jacket, and a NF Highpoint beanie. But even with 3 layers of clothing, I still feel the cold. With this down jacket, all I wear now is a long sleeve and this jacket. The 550 fill down is more than enough to keep me warm. As far as the zipper goes (from other reviewers), there's really nothing wrong w/the zipper. You would really have to abuse the zipper before it breaks. One of the good things about this jacket is the insulated hood. I don't really need to wear a beanie under it. I would definitely recommend this jacket.
Is the hood removable?

No, the hood is fixed. But according to TNF's website, the faux fur trim around the hood is removable.

I bought TNF Gotham coat 1 year ago to help me get through the bitterly cold Minnesota winters, however, now that i've had a chance to give it a thorough field test I feel that it doesn't quite live up to its reputation. The coat serves its purpose if you're wearing it in anything above 0 degrees, but once you get to -5 and below it's utterly useless against the cold. The side pockets also have a weird design to them and don't seem to have enough depth to keep your hands warm. I would say if you're looking for a warm goose down jacket for frigid winters then go with Canada Goose.

This jacket will keep you not only warm but also dry...I used this jacket for a trip to amsterdam in december 2012 and its very cold and raining around then(go in the spring)...It held up amazing, and there was no need for an umbrella. I did get cold at times but I believe it was from humidity.
Great jacket

Runs a little big...my boyfriend weighs 170 and is about 5'7" and a large was a little big on him. A medium would have fit perfect...other than that it's great, great price, fast shipping. I'm very pleased.

- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
To prepare for an upcoming vacation halfway around the world, I decided to look for a very warm jacket/coat that I could wear around all day without worrying about the temperature around me. I feel like with this one it has delivered. I have yet to actually test it in any truly ice cold weather. But compared to an older winter jacket I own it's already twice as warm, and my old jacket did a pretty good job in the icy Salt Lake City winters.
So far I haven't noticed any issues with the jacket or experienced anything to complain about. Some people said they have issues with the zipper being cheap and not holding up. I don't see any advance warning signs of this happening... and I hope it isn't an issue down the road.
I like the sleeves because the bomber jacket style helps hold the heat in with how it stretches around the wrist.
I am a 6'2 and extremely thin (150 lbs at most). So the jacket looks a little bit poofy on me. I have the width of a medium, but the arm length of a large. So my only option is to go with the large. This isn't a problem with the jacket, it's a problem with clothes in general for me.
Either way, I'm super excited with this jacket and know I've got many warm adventures in the cold ahead!

Hello. I'm 6'2 185lbs. I'm debating between a L and XL.
The thing is, I have an unusually wide chest and broad shoulders.
Would an XL be a better fit?

How wide re we talking here? Linebacker wide? I wear a 42 suit coat and a large fits me well.

I'm 6'2, and weigh around 150lbs. The jacket is perfect in length on the sleeves and down to the waste. It's a wide for me though (being so skinny). Based off your description I think this will be perfect for you Bob.

Hi all I would like to know if the hood on this jacket is detachable - and what exactly is wrong or bad with the zip? Some one posted that they were not happy with the zip??

The fur is removable, the hood itself is not.

I am very picky with my jackets as I get hot a lot but also don't like to freeze. Before this I had the Mcmurdo which was very bulky hard to move about in & that thing just made me sweat even in a t-shirt! This jacket is how every nice and warm but does not make me sweat. Even in 18* temp in NY I was just wearing a collared shirt under this jacket & it kept me nice and comfortable, not cold at all. The only two complains I have is, the fur in the hood is just plain stupid because you wont be able to see through them unless this jacket came with rear view mirrors! They should have made the hood a little smaller then add the fur part so its more practical and it doesn't cover the whole face. But the jacket works fine for me since I took the fur part out. Also the zipper is ridiculous! SHAME ON YOU NORTHFACE!! They want to charge us so much money for a jacket at least put in a proper zipper & don't rip us off!! That's the two reasons I gave it a 4 star but other than that this is a really good jacket. Hopefully next year they will fix these issues and it will be the perfect jacket. But as always got excellent service from backcountry! One of my favorite stores on the internet, I am always bragging to my friends about it.
Great Jacket - Poor Zipper

Everything about this Coat is great except one thing: The zipper is too small and cheaply made.
I live in Korea where the winters can be quite cold and so far this coat has kept me very warm. But that ZIPPER! What was NorthFace thinking to make such a heavy duty jacket, and put a zipper on it that is so small and weak that it belongs on a child's toy - Barbie or Ken maybe. On my first day it separated at the bottom like most cheap zippers. It is also very hard to get started bare handed and impossible to zip with gloves on. I plan on having a better zipper put in once this one fails - which it will in time.
BUT, aside from that one thing, again it is a GREAT COAT and well worth the cost.
The sizes seem to run big. I am 5'11" 190 lbs and ordered a XL because of my long arms. I had to return that one and got a large, which is still kind of big, but works for me for layering.
By-the-Way KUDOS to Backcountry for their great online chat. I had my replacement coat in no time! Wonderful service BC !

BEWARE!! Vizzy285's report led me to believe a size Medium would be fine for me, since my stats are 5'9 165lbs currently. I got the medium and I felt like I just pulled a wool sweater from the baby gap out of the dryer after first wash. It "fit" but barely...so I suppose it depends on your build, I got like a 44" chest and I guess my arms and torso are kind of long but I thought I'ma pretty average build. Definitely got the impression that moving around, the protection would be skirted due to the arms hiking up or the waist band hiking up from activity. I'm going with a Large and I strongly urge others to do the same unless they like a very tight fit with little room for movement.
A great jacket...I really Love it
