You can climb most anything with an 11-speed drivetrain, but “most anything” isn’t good enough if you’re gunning for segment records in Leadville—that’s why serious competitors want the wider gearing range of the SRAM X01 Eagle 12-Speed BB30 Direct Mount Crankset.
Apart from the obvious fine-tuning that a 12-speed drivetrain provides, the teeth of the X01 Eagle are carefully machined to grab hold of your chain and never let go, even through the chunkiest of high-speed rock gardens, and to shed mud for cleaner shifting and less wear. As you’d expect from a crankset that isn’t exactly cheap, the X01 Eagle’s carbon-and-foam-core construction is remarkably light (just a few grams heavier than the top-of-the-universe XX1 Eagle) and stiff for long-lasting power on those high-altitude rides when every pedal stroke starts to count.
SRAM mounts the chainring directly to the cranks, too, which cuts out a lot of hardware to eliminate weight, flex, and potential stress points. The X01 Eagle ships with a 32t ring, but it’s easy to swap it out if you want something tailored more to crazy-making climbs or (for the truly insane) something a little larger. The only limits are your legs and lungs.
