There was a time, not long ago, when Avid (sub-company of SRAM) brakes were bad. Nearly inarguably bad, save for a few holdouts. At the same time, Shimano’s hydraulic brakes got really, really good, which all but spelled the end for Avid. Things started to turn around, though, with the Avid X0 Trail brakes, and SRAM has completed the turnaround (and pursuant rebadging) with its new Guide RSC brakes. They’re good. Good enough that they might be better than Shimano’s lineup, and certainly worth consideration, rather than outright dismissal.
They’re adjustable, both for reach and for pad contact, and the brakes utilize four-piston calipers to deliver gobs of stopping power. On top of that, the RS and RSC models feature a technology called Swinglink, which is a cam shaped specifically to reduce the dead spot in the lever travel. Of note for those outside the US, or who insist on running their brakes "moto style," the levers are completely reversible.
