Description

A road warrior with a minimalist attitude.

Saucony's Men's ProGrid Kinvara 3 Running Shoe embraces the idea of minimalist design without shorting you on cushioning or comfort. At just 7.7, ounces this shoe feels feathery light underfoot so you have less shoe to contend with and everything from the uppers to the outsole were designed with enough flexibility to encourage your foot to move with utter freedom. Seamless uppers feel buttery smooth against your foot whether you decide to go barefoot (as some do) or rock a thin pair of synthetic socks. A mere four millimeters of heel-forefoot offset (drop) allows you to more easily adopt a midfoot or forefoot striking style, but there's enough cushioning to allow you to revert to a heel strike if you need to relax a little late in your run.

Saucony has a range of minimalist-style road shoes under ten ounces, including the Mirage 3 and the Virrata. Compared to the Kinavara, the Mirage offers additional midsole support and a HRC Strobel board to improve cushioning while the Virrata features a zero-drop offset and ultralight build (just 6.5 ounces). A healthy balance between these two options, the Kinavara is for the 5k runner looking for a reduced-drop shoe or the marathoner who wants to go light without sacrificing cushioning or flex.

  • Minimalist Flex Film upper uses welding to reduce seams and overall weight and helps secure your foot in place
  • Internal Bootie Construction makes for a buttery smooth internal fit that reduces friction and drastically improves comfort
  • Memory foam heel pads comfortably cradle your heel and keep it in place
  • HydraMAX collar lining provides light cushioning around your ankle for comfort and protection
  • ProGrid and High Abrasion EVA provide absorb impact and smooth out the ride on the road without adding unnecessary weight
  • Low, 4mm drop (heel-forefoot offset) means that there's just a 4mm difference between the measured height of your heel and the measured height of your forefoot
  • This low drop creates a natural foot position inside the shoe, encourages proper biomechanical flex, and allows you to more easily utilize a mid or forefoot striking style
  • XT-900 rubber is flexible, highly abrasion-resistant, and it features triangular lugs that offer supreme grip and traction on the road

I've only run about ten miles in these shoes thus far, so I'll hold off on a performance review until I log more miles.

Initial feel is extremely lightweight. Although I've noticed that the heel has more of a cup than many road shoes. I prefer this fit but it may rub the achilles for some. I wear a size 8.5 in most running shoes and these 8.5's fit spot-on.

This is my 3rd pair of Kinvara's, they are light and yet they offer decent support. I have completely worn out my previous 2 pairs, what can I say, I like them. However, the one thing I noticed with my previous pairs is that they wear out a bit faster than other running shoes that I have used. Maybe that is a function of its lightness, that is the only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5. Anyway, I hope this my 3rd pair lasts longer. One observation, i use these running shoes on pavement and on the road, I only tried them once on the trail and needless to say, its that they are not design for trail running which need a bit more stiffer soles.

Just flat out, this is an awesome shoe. I've run trails, on the road, and on the track with it. Just such a good ride, it has a softer forefoot than most, which is good for me because I'm a forefoot striker. I give it 4 stars only because of the durability, it only lasted me about 2.5 months. Makes me pretty sad :( Definitely a shoe that can be used everywhere, but make sure you rotate it in, the 4mm drop can take a little time to get used to.

Wanted to try the whole 'minimalist' thing, and had had a hard time getting in to with Nike Free and New Balance shoes. These shoes give me the little extra support/sole that I was missing with the other shoes. Not bulky like other trail shoes I own, great for a longer run without the weight.
