Seeing that Santa Cruz is based in one of the best riding destinations in North America, it's really no surprise that their award-winning 5010 was distilled through countless hours of riding across the towering redwoods and undulating coastal ranges around their Nor Cal headquarters. Using this legendary riding environment for prototype testing and design articulation, the Santa Cruz 5010 2.0 Carbon CC Bike Frame is faster and more aggressive than ever for 2016 with progressive geometry tweaks and an updated VPP3 suspension.
Knowing when to stick with a winning formula, the unchanged CC-level carbon frame retains the legendary stiffness, strength, and lightweight efficiency you've come to expect from Santa Cruz. In fact, it tips the scales at an astounding 280 grams less than the base C-level carbon, all without sacrificing strength or stiffness desired by trail riders thrashing their rigs on a regular basis. Using a higher-grade carbon lay up allows engineers at Santa Cruz to place less carbon in key areas, resulting in a frame that's an absolute rocketship on climbs, yet stout and stiff when the going gets rough.
Taking design cues from Santa Cruz's all-mountain menacing Bronson, the 5010 2.0 benefits from a longer, low-slung chassis and slacker head tube angle for greater composure across notoriously technical trails. The single biggest change is a more relaxed posture resulting from the head tube angle slackening from 68 to 67 degrees. This places the bike into the realm of the previous Bronson for a more capable descender across steeps with intimidating rocks and roots. The rest of the bike follows suit, with the 5010 2.0's longer top tube (20-25mm increase in reach) boosting stability at speed, as well as accommodating the use of shorter stems for confident downhill handling. And to keep you agile with low-slung handling, the 13.15 inch bottom bracket is all the better for cleaning uphill switchbacks and drifting around corners.
Travel slightly increases from the previous 125 to 130mm, giving the 5010 2.0 a playful persona that's best ridden popping off rollers, railing around berms, and flowing down twisty singletrack. Benefiting from a revised VPP3 suspension, the 5010 2.0 sports a stiffer box-section upper link and neatly recessed lower link that reduces rock strikes. The updated VPP suspension lends a highly efficient pedaling platform, allowing you to power up steep climbs laden with speed-robbing impediments. It's more progressive than before, ramping up at end stroke to prevent bottom outs on bigger hits and technical stretches of trail. Add in the FOX Float Factory Evol shock for increased small-bump sensitivity, courtesy of its silky-smooth Kashima coating and extra volume (Evol) air sleeve.
