Built on the same World Cup Shell chassis used in Salomon athletes' FIS-caliber boots, the Salomon Quest Max 130 Alpine Touring Boot takes the power and precision of a race boot into the backcountry. A burly 130 flex index and snug race-boot fit means these boots take no quarter on the downhill, but the Ride and Hike Technology ski/walk switch provides the cuff flexibility of much gentler boot when you're ready to hit the uphills.
With a flex of 130, there's no mistaking what the Quest Max 130 is all about: going fast, going big, and going again. The flex, combined with the burly power strap, gives the Quest Max enough backbone to punch it down the lines of your dreams, so you stand at the top of any terrain without wondering if you'll be able to make it down. For increased lateral stiffness and the edge-to-edge power necessary to drive big-mountain boards, Salomon joined the shell and cuff with its Oversized Pivot, which keeps lateral flex super stiff, so you can jump from your inside to outside edge with instant response and killer precision. That's all pretty much the same as its brother the Quest Pro, but Salomon gave the Quest Max a narrower 98mm for a snugger fit which, along with the World Cup Shell and Twinframe technology, gives it an even more bomber feel on the descent.
Salomon packed the Quest Max full of tricks, too, some big and some small. Perhaps the biggest is the 360° Custom Shell, a bi-material polyurethane beast that has heat-moldable panels to provide a perfectly tailored fit without any punching or grinding. The My Custom Fit 3D Race liner is also fully moldable, and works with the shell to perfectly mirror the contours of your feet to serve up killer comfort and unbeatable precision and power. All the buckles are micro-adjustable for near-perfect volume adjustment, and you can choose between three positions for the 3D adjustable instep buckle, so you can find the angle that pulls your heel most securely into the pocket.
The last thing the Quest Max has hidden up its sleeve is the Ride and Hike Technology ski/walk switch. A metal backbone runs up the spine of the boot and can be released into hike mode by flipping the switch into a raised position. This sets the cuff free from the shell, giving you enough ankle articulation and cuff movement to turn short tours and otherwise killer bootpacks into breezy jaunts, so you still have the juice to hammer big lines back down to the car. A rubberized sole takes the sketch out of slick and exposed rock scrambles, and a waterproof gusset forms a barrier between the overlapping shell panels to keep your feet dry when you're booting up or shredding pow on the way down.
