We're starting to see ovalized rings like the Rotor Mountain Inner Q-Ring popping up everywhere, from the local criteriums to the marathon mountain bike race courses, but why? The oblong shape of the Q-Rings lends more leverage to the pedal stroke, extracting more power from your legs and more efficiency at the same time. The effect felt on the bike is a smoothing of the pedal stroke, less exertion to achieve the same speed and power output, and a reduction in that "dead spot" you feel during each rotation.
The Rotor Mountain Inner Q-Ring comes in a 26-tooth version with a BCD of 80, or a 27-tooth version with a (four-arm) BCD of 64. It is designed for use with 10-speed drivetrains and is compatible with SRAM and Shimano drivetrains. For best performance, Rotor recommends running Q-Rings in tandem with others (unless, of course, you are running a single chainring drivetrain). For maximum benefit of the Q-Ring design, install the chainring so that the long axis of the ring aligns with the crank arm.
